JETS 2, PENGUINS 1

0:00: The Jets have officially earned their first win of the season and their first win in front of their home crowd. The fans are earsplittingly loud (not sure if that's a word, but it seems appropriate).

0:44: Pens have pulled Flower!

1:58: Jets back to full strength.

2:16: Burmistrov is having a ridiculawesome game. He's got 2 assists already and just had a shorthanded breakaway. But somehow, Tanger is able to get back and put just enough pressure on him to allow Flower to make the toe save! Those two are quite the tandem tonight.

3:58: Things getting a little out of hand now as tempers flare on both teams. Penalties are being sorted out as we speak somehow, Pitt ends up on the PP here!

4:52: Tanger out of the box. He gets a pass as he exits but is hindered by a pair of Jets hanging on him and can't get a quality shot off.

6:52: Tanger to the box. Pens on the PK.

7:46: Looks like a little breather does wonders. Jets just came on hard, barraging Fleury with a few quality shots. Letang actually dove into the air at the end of that sequence as Flower was down and batted the puck out of danger. Big ups for Tanger there. Fleury actually gave his buddy Tanger a few pats of thanks on the helmet after that. Hahaha.

8:11: Jets coach Claude Noel wisely decides to use his timeout as he has a few players that have been stuck on the ice for an extended period of time. They need to cool their jets. Get it?!

12:18: Oh, no. Mark Stuart gets struck in the head with a Niskanen wrister from the point. Play is immediately whistled dead and the Jets D-man hurries to the dressing room. Hope he's okay!

15:19: This is coming down to a goalie duel. Both netminders just had gorgeous glove saves one after the other.

17:36: Zach Bogosian just reminded me of my idol Bobby Orr as he rushed the puck end to end and capped it by ringing a shot off the post.

18:15: Sully is freed from the box.

20:00: This should be an awesome period. As the Black Eyed Peas would say, 'Let's get it started!' Pens start off with Sully in the box for 1:45.

- Michalek gets the Pens' first goal against the new Jets
- He now has five points in nine career games against Winnipeg (formerly Atlanta)
- Letestu has taken 14 faceoffs and won 8

0:00: Pens end the period on a good note. Jets' lead is cut to 2-1 on the goal from Z. Winnipeg outshooting Pittsburgh by the slimmest of margins, 22-21.

1:38: Finally! Off an offensive-zone faceoff, Michalek absolutely drills a bullet through traffic past the hot Jets goalie! Slater had won the draw, but Cooke jumped on it and sent the puck back to Letang, who quickly slid it over to Z for the score. Jets 2, Pens 1

2:01: Dupuis finds himself alone in front of Pavelec!! He tries deking to his backhand but Pavelec turns it aside!!

3:10: Neal with a beauty of a breakout pass to Park, who embarks on a 2-on-1 ! A few quick passes back and forth between Sullivan and Park, but somehow Pavelec gets a glove on 12's shot!

6:07: Pens back to full strength.

8:07: I take that back. Pens head right back to the PK as James Neal gets sent to the box.

8:40: Pens back to full strength. Jets certainly had some quality chances on that PP. Cue the sigh of relief.

10:40: After that great chance, Park's going to the box. Pens on the PK.

10:48: Park literally sends a puck through the goal mouth on a rebound opportunity! It literally hugged the red line as it slid through the blue paint and out of danger.

13:00: The puck takes a crazy bounce off the back boards and comes back to hit Flower, who isn't expecting it and steps back in surprise, knocking his net off its moorings. You don't see that every day.

14:55: Great shift just now by the Sullivan-Park-Neal line. It ended with Sully getting some open space to wind up for a slap shot that was blocked by Stuart. He's clearly in pain.

17:07: Jets back to full strength.

19:07: Cooke was a beast just now on the forecheck! After laying out Ron Hainsey behind the net, the Jets D-man trips him up and is now going to the box. Pens get an early PP!

20:00: Middle frame has begun in Winnipeg!

SECOND PERIOD

FIRST PERIOD NOTES

- Jets' official Twitter said that goal eight seconds in tied the franchise record for quickest tally in team history
- Vitale has 2 blocked shots
- Staal has won 3 of his 4 faceoffs

0:00: That'll do it for the first. Pens trail the Jets 2-0 and are being outshot 10-7.

1:33: Burmistrov puts a perfect pass right in Tanner Glass' wheelhouse. He one-times it home for the score to steal the momentum right back. Jets 2, Pens 0

3:14: Pens seem to have shaken off whatever was slowing them down to start the game. Letang swoops in and scoops up a loose puck in front of the net, but Pavelec has to come up with a big save.

4:22: Kunitz gets a prime rebound opportunity in the slot, but he has to come in on his backhand and misses the wide-open net!

5:59: We've got a scrap with Engelland and Chris Thorburn! Engo with a lot of passion trying to get his team going! Fight breaks up amicably with Engo mouthing "good job" to the former Pen as the refs separate them. Hopefully that gets the boys fired up.

7:19: Neal literally parts a bunch of Jets in the slot, but after all that deft manuvering he hits the post!! So close!

8:24: Jets back to full strength. Solid kill by Winnipeg. Still no pucks to the cage for the Pens.

10:24: Pressure on Pittsburgh gets relieved a bit when Blake Wheeler is sent to the box for holding Park. Pens on the PP!

12:20: Pens have yet to register a shot on goal. Jets already have four (along with six blocks attemped slash missed attempts). They certainly have the Pens back on their heels right now...

15:22: Play seems to have settled down after that ridiculously fast start (which the Jets say tied the franchise record for quickest goal in team history).

19:53: Talk about a quick start. Jets get on the board just eight seconds in on a tic-tac-toe play that ends with Kyle Wellwood tapping one past Fleury. The already-raucous crowd goes nuts. Jets 1, Pens 0

20:00: The teams are cleared for takeoff!!! (That was a bad joke. Sorry). Puck drops. Game on!

8:00 PM:
The moment is almost here. The moment, that is, when the Penguins will hit the ice in Winnipeg for the first time since Feb. 16, 1996, where goaltender Tom Barrasso stopped all 32 shots he faced for his 10th shutout as a Penguin and Jaromir Jagr scored the only goal in a 1-0 Penguins' victory.

Fifteen years is obviously a long time, so it's going to be incredibly special for the Penguins to go down that runway and take on these new Jets. Unfortunately, not only will Pittsburgh be without Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Dustin Jeffrey and Brooks Orpik, all of whom did not make the trip, but they'll also be missing Tyler Kennedy. As reported earlier, TK is experiencing concussion-like symptoms and will need to be evaluated further. Steve Macintyre will replace him in the lineup.

The Penguins are just the second team to visit the Jets in their cozy barn, the MTS Centre (which I hear is absolutely freezing in spite of its smaller size). So in honor of that, here's the pre-game intro Winnipeg played before their home opener. Enjoy watching history unfold.
