Pens-Caps In-Game Blog

2:12: Wideman burries a shot for a power-play goal and the Caps get a 3-2 win in this game. Caps 3, Pens 2.

2:56: Staal gets called for a penalty (tripping). Caps will be on the power play.

5:00: Puck drops. Overtime on. Here we go.....

0:00: Third period ends with the game tied at 2-2. We'll play some overtime.

0:43: Couple more chances for the Pens in front but can't score.

2:10: Stop in play as the puck slid inside the plastic cover on the outside of the net. You don't see that too often. I know, I'm easily amused.

3:37: Neal does it again!!!! A power-play goal ties this game up at 2-2. Malkin found him coming down the far side and he snapped a shot through the 5-hole of Vokoun. Pens 2, Caps 2.

4:48: The Pens will get a PP as Brouwer gets two minutes in the box for holding.

5:52: Malkin with some more dancing and finds Sullivan in the slot, but his shot is blocked.

12:06: The penalty expires. Pens get a couple good scoring chances, but just missing the net.

14:06: Asham drops the gloves with Beagle. Asham gets the KO as Beagle goes down hard. He stayed down for some time and needed assistance from his teammates to get up. Thankfully he appears to be OK. Big roar of approval from the crowd when Asham is shown on the Video Board.

Pens came away on the power play as Beagle gets a 2-minute penalty for roughing.

19:20: Green's shot from the point appeared to go into the top corner of the net, but the ref waived it off. It's under review.

After a review: Ovechkin is awarded the goal on a tip-in. Caps 2, Pens 1.

20:00: Puck drops. Game on. Third period underway.

- Kennedy & Neal each have 4 shots
- Engelland has blocked 3 shots
- Pens outshooting the Caps, 21-14

0:00: Staal NEARLY re-directed a shot from the point into the net. The puck slid just by the post. That'll do it for the second period. After 40 minutes we're all tied at 1-1.

2:12: Great work by Staal with his big body. He throws a check in the corner on a Cap, steals the puck, skates to the slot and whips a shot on goal. Vokoun however makes the save.

8:00: The penalty expires. Back to 5-on-5.

10:25: Johnson is so $$$ right now. Couple huge saves while the Pens couldn't clear. His heroics sparks the team and they draw a penalty. Laich gets called for cross checking.

12:35: The Caps are pressuring hard. The Pens are under heavy enemy fire. Johnson with a wonderous save on Backstrom in the slot.

14:44: Chimera takes a pass and has a semi breakaway, but his shot just misses the post.

16:51: Nice pull-push with the puck by Kennedy open up a lane, but his shot Vokoun makes the save.

17:48: The Caps win an Ozone faceoff and Wideman gets off a slapper from the point. Johnson stops and covers.

18:40: Kind of a weird goal as Knuble crashes the net and the puck goes off Johnson's inside pad and over the goal line. Pens 1, Caps 1.

20:00: Puck drops. Game on. Second period underway.

- The #TwitterLine comes thru with a goal from @jneal_18 with assists to @malkin71_ & @sullivan26
- Richard Park 3-0 in faceoffs
- The Capitals had 0 shots in the final 11:58 of the 1st period

0:00: First period closes out with the Pens leading 1-0 on a goal from James Neal (Sullivan and Malkin with the assists). The #TwitterLine comes through for Pittsburgh. Also, the Caps were outshot in the period by a 12-3 margin.

3:06: Staal misses a wide-open net. The Big Mac was so close that Michelle Crechiolo could have tasted it. Penalty expires.

4:47: Big ovation from the crowd as the Video Board recognized Kunitz for signing a 2-year contract extension.

5:35: Pens will get another power play. Halpern gets called for holding. And even more exciting is that it is time for the Big Mac Attack. If Pitt scores a PP goal then everyone in attendance gets a free Big Mac - double trouble. Michelle Crechiolo gave me specific instructions to document this moment. Mission accomplished.

7:52: Penalty expires. Malkin and Cooke had a couple good shots from the slot, but no goals.

9:57: Caps Alzner called for delay of game after flipping the puck over the glass in the D zone. Pens on the PP.

10:55: Malkin dances through 3 Caps and swoops around the net. He sets up Engelland from the point. Vokoun makes the save.

11:57: Johnson makes a pad stop on Green and then gloves down a shot by Knuble. Knuble was in his usual spot, causing problems in front of the net. Pens coach Bylsma said before that game that they would focus on keeping Knuble in check.

13:58: Malkin is definitely fired up for this game. He's flying all over the ice and making plays. He came just short of catching a puck for a breakaway.

17:19: Right after the goal Park gets a chance from the slot and Niskanen gets off a bomb from the point. The Pens with the early momentum.

17:33: James Neal!!!!! Neal with a one-timer from the near circle blows by Vokoun. Pens 1, Caps 0.

20:00: Puck drops. Game on. First period underway.

7:06 PM:
Pens owner/chairmen/legend Mario Lemieux drops the ceremonial puck between Malkin and Ovechkin.
