Orpik Recovering From Lower-Body Injury
Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik is still recovering from the lower abdominal/hernia surgery he underwent on his right side earlier this summer, but is participating fully in training camp and expects to be ready for the start of the regular season.

“I’m definitely not 100 percent, but it’s getting there,” Orpik said. “It’s definitely probably right on target for where I’m supposed to be.”

Orpik’s surgery took place on July 20 in Pittsburgh, with his recovery time projected to take 6-8 weeks. His main goal over the next couple weeks of camp is to regain his fitness and conditioning.

“It’s more just trying to get my game shape back,” he said. “I’ve only skated about five times so far. So I’m in great running shape, but you get on the ice and you feel like you’re in really bad shape. It’s just a matter of being patient and just trying to get some good practices in.”

Orpik underwent the same surgery on his left side in the summer of 2010. And although it’s frustrating for him to deal with the same injury and rehabilitation process two offseasons in a row, he’s glad the problem is being taken care of now before the season begins.

“The first year I knew I had it, so I had it done right at the beginning of summer,” he said. “This summer, it just kind of gradually got worse so I didn’t get it done until the end of July.

“I had to play a little catch up towards the end, but better then than in the middle of the season. (My recovery) is right where it’s supposed to be.”
