Mid-Am Hockey recently sponsored a Girls Multi District Goalie Camp that took place from July 3rd to July 8th at Kent State University.

The goal of the camp was to bring the best female goaltenders from around the country to one place where they could be exposed to scouts, coaches, and Division 1 schools.  And most importantly, continue to grow and flourish in a sport they love with other goalies.

The success of the camp can be explained by a few fractions.

3/12 to 9/12,  there are 12 districts in USA Hockey, and the camp has gone from only receiving goalies from 3 districts to 9 districts this year.

44/50, the number of different states they received players from at this camp.

Yevet Anderson, Mid-Am Section Director, spoke about the major roles of the camp, “This is all about giving them the tools that they can use and honing their skills.” She continued, “We want to give these girls a chance to succeed at a higher level.”  Yevet Anderson has been involved with hockey all her life working with USA Hockey, Mid-Am, and the Erie Lady Lions.

As well as Anderson, Head Camp Coach Earl Utter, who has coached at the Women’s Hockey team at SUNY Cortland the past 5 years, stressed the importance of widening the girls skill set as a top priority of the camp.

“We want to broaden their range of techniques and styles they can use,” Utter added.  “As well as different skills, we want to teach drills and activities they can use in practice.”

Ashley Harper, who has played goalie at Mercyhurst University and was an Assistant Coach at the camp, grew up in the Pittsburgh hockey environment and certainly sees an improvement in opportunities for women’s hockey.

Harper was born in Butler, PA and went on to play at Culver Academy before playing at Mercyhurst.

“When I started playing, there were so few teams to choose from, now girls have options on what teams are available for them.”

Harper will spend some of the rest of her summer helping out at camps overseas in Austria where she hopes to bring the skills she has learned here to new places and players.
