Penguins to Hold First Girls Hockey Camp
The Pittsburgh Penguins will hold their first Girls Hockey Camp June 23-25 at Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.

The unique camp – open to girls in three age groups from 5-19 – will feature three accomplished female instructors: Brianne McLaughlin,  former Robert Morris goaltender and member of the 2010 USA Olympic Team; Valerie Chouinard, former star at Mercyhurst College who played for the Canadian women’s national team; and Marianne Watkins, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ skating consultant.

The camp is one of three Penguins youth hockey programs being offered this summer – including the annual Scrimmage Camp June 20-24 at Ice Castle, and the popular Penguins Summer Hockey School August 15-19 at RMU Island Sports Center.

“We’ve been very encouraged by the dramatic increase in participation in girls hockey in the Pittsburgh area,” said Rich Hixon, the Penguins’ Executive Director of Strategic Planning, who oversees all youth hockey activities. “Our other camps always have been co-ed, and we’ve had girls take part, but we thought it was time to develop a camp focused specifically for girls – with some great role models as instructors.”

Age groups for the Pittsburgh Penguins Girls Hockey Camp are 5-and-older, 10-and-older, and 14-19. Participants will receive instruction on basic hockey skills, power skating, conditioning and fitness while also participating in a scrimmage. Full hockey equipment is required, including neck guard and mouthpiece.

Girls and their parents may register at www.pittsburghpenguins.com/girlscamp. For more information, contact Mark Shuttleworth, the Penguins’ Director of Amateur Hockey, at 412.255.1885 or mshuttleworth@pittsburghpenguins.com

The Pittsburgh Penguins Scrimmage Camp and the Penguins Summer Hockey School are open to youth players in four age groups: mite (5-8), squirt (9-10), pee wee (11-12) and bantam/midget (13-17).

The Scrimmage Camp features scrimmages, playoffs and championship games in addition to offering instruction in skills and power skating. Instructors include Penguins Stanley Cup champion alums Phil Bourque and Jim Paek, as well as Marianne Watkins. Players and their parents may register at www.pittsburghpenguins.com/scrimmagecamp.

The Summer Hockey School focuses on skills, drills and power skating with three hours of ice time a day, and 15 hours of ice time for the week. There also will be scrimmages. Instructors include Bourque and Watkins. Players and their parents may register online at www.pittsburghpenguins.com/hockeyschool.
