Penguins \'Beard-A-Thon\' Raises Over $64,000 for Mario Lemieux Foundation
Pittsburgh Penguins fans raised more than $64,000 for the Mario Lemieux Foundation by participating in the team’s third annual “Beard-A-Thon” campaign presented by SUPERCUTS.  The Penguins led all participating NHL teams in this unique fundraiser through the first round of the playoffs with more than 800 beard growers and $64,199 donated to date.

“Pittsburgh Penguins fans always respond when we ask them to support worthwhile causes like the Mario Lemieux Foundation,” said Penguins CEO and president David Morehouse.  “We are extremely proud of the efforts of our fans – those who grew playoff beards as well as those who pledged other beard growers – and know the money raised will support the incredible work of the Lemieux Foundation.”

“This is the third straight year the MLF has had the opportunity to partner with the Penguins on this outstanding fundraiser to benefit our cancer research initiatives as well as Austin’s Playroom Project,” said Tom Grealish, president of the foundation. “The Lemieux Foundation would like to thank the Pittsburgh Penguins organization and all the beard growers who supported Mario’s charity during the playoffs.”

The Beard-A-Thon encouraged fans to “grow one for the team” for the duration of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and have their friends, family and business associates pledge them.  Fans who were unable or unwilling to grow a playoff beard could also pledge their favorite NHL player or build a virtual playoff beard on the website.

Thirteen of the sixteen teams competing in the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs participated in this year’s Beard-A-Thon campaign and have raised over $259,000 to date for local team charities.
