0:00: That's game. Pens fall to the Isles by a score of 9-3. The teams finished with a combined 346 penalty minutes. Pens with 163, Isles with 183.
0:41: There's just two Pens left on the bench and four skaters on the ice. Okposo, Letang and Sterling have all left the ice with 10-minute misconducts. Konopka got two five-minute fighting majors, MacDonald got a five-minute fighting major and Hillen got a 10-minute misconduct.
2:08: Grabner wheels down the ice and nets a shorthanded tally. Islanders 9, Penguins 3
3:48: The Pens have 1:52 left in a power play, as the Isles had gotten whistled for too many men on the ice. Ironic...
5:11: We're all back to full strength.
7:20: The Isles have a 4-on-3 opportunity. Okposo and Sterling had gotten coincidentals on that last play, then TK got whistled for holding.
7:48: Now Okposo runs over Johnny after he rips a shot on net.
9:34: I can't get over the sight of just six Penguins left on the bench. This is absolutely insane. Isles back to full strength.
11:54: How do you know when your troops are depleted? When Brooks Orpik is playing forward on the power play.
12:15: Kennedy makes some room for himself in the slot area and whistles a shot past Koskinen. Islanders 8, Penguins 3
13:00: 2:46 left on the Pens' PP.
15:13: Pens are down to 12 skaters. Just SIX players on their bench. Somehow, though, Pittsburgh has another five-minute power play after the dust settles.
15:13: So far, the NHL game sheet has Haley and Talbot getting five-minute fighting majors. The refs are currently in the midst of trying to figure out what is going on and who is getting what.
15:13: After Haley engages Talbot on that play, he decides to go down the ice and engage Johnny, who had been minding his own business in the net. Godard races off the bench to come to the aid of his goaltender.
15:13: World Wrestling Entertainment Round II just broke out in the corner of the Isles zone, as Tangradi is down after Gillies gets him in the face.
16:30: We're back to 5-on-5.
18:42: Johnny seems to be okay. Okposo and Orpik are each getting coincidental penalties for roughing. The teams are skating 4-on-4.
18:42: Grabner absolutely bowls over Johnson on his way to the net, who is back between the pipes for the Pens.
20:00: The final frame is underway.
SECOND PERIOD NOTES
- The NHL game sheet is the longest one I've ever seen with all the goals and penalties
- Pens have 58 PIM to the Isles' 75 PIM
- Goligoski leads with six shots while Letang has five
0:00: The first 40 minutes are in the books. The Isles lead the Pens 8-2 and in shots, 28-27.
0:40: Pens back to full strength.
2:09: Fleury initially robs Tavares with the pad save, but Moulson is able to jab in the rebound. Islanders 8, Penguins 2
2:30: Just 10 seconds into Godard's penalty, Michalek is whistled for slashing. The Isles are getting a 5-on-3 PP for 1:50.
2:40: Godard is getting a pair for roughing. Pens on the PK.
3:57: Okposo rings a shot off the crossbar.
6:28: Actually, I stand corrected. Matt Martin ended up with a two-minute instigating penalty, a five-minute fighting major, a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct.
6:29: Moulson takes a feed in the slot and snaps a shot top shelf past Fleury. Islanders 7, Penguins 2
8:03: Yikes. Engelland, Dupuis and Rupp all got game misconducts. The Pens will have to finish the night down two forwards and a defensemen. Hamonic and Bailey got game misconducts as well. Martin's five-minute major was deemed "instigating."
9:36: Those timeouts work wonders for Staal. He scored immediately following one last night as well. Isles back to full strength.
10:56: And it worked!!! Jordan Staal one-times a blast past Koskinen for the score! Islanders 6, Penguins 2
11:02: With 56 seconds remaining on the PP, the Pens call a timeout for Todd Reirden to rally the troops and draw up a play for them to use.
12:06: Nielsen retaliates on Flower after Fleury tries to push him out of his line of vision. The Pens have a 5-on-3 PP for a full two minutes.
12:51: Martin's penalty stays on the board since it was a major. Pens still on the PP for 3:20!
13:52: The Pens get on the board! Goligoski's shot rebounds directly to the stick of Letang, who blasts a puck to the net that deflects off an Islander past Koskinen. Islanders 6, Penguins 1
14:39: The Pens are getting a five-minute power play for Matt Martin's actions.
14:39: The refs are trying to sort everything out.
14:40: It looks like World Wrestling Entertainment instead of a hockey game at center ice. Dupuis and Josh Bailey are duking it out, Rupp and Hamonic have dropped the gloves and Talbot and Engelland were going at it with another pair of Isles. The replay shows that Matt Martin went after Talbot from behind. Goligoski was the only Pen not engaged in fisticuffs.
16:15: Now Haley wheels to the front of the net and sends the puck past Johnny to put the Isles up 6-0 just 30 seconds later. Marc-Andre Fleury is now in goal for the Pens. Islanders 6, Penguins 0
16:45: Hamonic's blast from the point is nimbly re-directed by Tavares past Johnson. Islanders 5, Penguins 0
19:30: Alex Goligoski just got robbed!!! He had a wide-open net but Koskinen somehow makes the save with his leg as he's sprawled on the ice!
20:00: Letang back on the ice to start the second period. Phew!!! Tavares was assessed a penalty on that first period-ending play. So Pens start the middle frame on the PP.
WATCH: Dan Bylsma's pregame scrum:
FIRST PERIOD NOTES
- Staal leads all Pens with 8:26 of ice time
- He's also 6-4 in the faceoff dot
- Letang's three hits lead the team
0:00: Letang is down by the Pens net and can't get up. He and Tavares had been tangled in the corner, and as Letang was skating away Tavares whacked him on the leg with his stick. The trainer came out to the ice to help Letang off. Period ends with the Isles up 4-0 and with a 16-10 advantage in shots.
0:46: A weird situation just happened. Engelland and Zenon Konopka were jawing in front of the Islanders bench, with two refs coming over to break it up. However, play continued for some reason, opening the door for Grabner to speed down the ice and tickle the twine behind Johnson. Islanders 4, Penguins 0
1:58: Godard tries to give the Pens a spark when he drops the gloves with Trevor Gillies (who has one of the most impressive fu manchu mustaches I've ever seen). It's a draw as they agree to break it up.
2:13: Hamonic sends a beauty of a pass from the half-wall to Parenteau, who swiftly re-directs the puck past Johnson for the power-play tally. Islanders 3, Penguins 0
2:49: Both Adams and Dupuis broke their sticks one after the other as they each tried to clear the zone!!! But Adams sacrifices his body and comes up with a huge shot block on the following play.
3:26: The Isles are now on the PP for the next 1:16.
4:08: The Pens just got whistled for too many men on the ice. We're now going to go 4-on-4 for the next 42 seconds.
5:26: Rupp draws a penalty as Hamonic hooks him. Pens on their second PP of the period.
6:35: The speedster Michael Grabner, who won the Fastest Skater event at the 2011 Honda SuperSkills competition during All-Star weekend, is hauled down by Michalek as he wheels to the net on a breakaway. He's getting a penalty shot, but Johnny isn't fooled by Grabner as the Isles forward tries to deke backhand. Huge save by Johnson!!!
7:09: Jesse Joensuu's shot from the slot flies past Johnson, who's screened by Matt Martin and Alex Goligoski battling in front. Islanders 2, Penguins 0
8:42: Parenteau wheels down the ice and whips a puck at Johnson, who gives him nothing as he comes out and challenges the shot.
9:36: Haley's getting his wish for a fight, as he and Adams duke it out at center ice. Haley's icing his hand in the penalty box.
11:09: Hamonic's blast from the point beats Johnson stick side. Talbot had made a nice initial block on the preceding play, but the puck bounced out to the Isles D man stationed on the blue line. Islanders 1, Penguins 0
11:49: Adams throws the puck at the net and it's bobbled by Koskinen, who initally can't find it, but it lands back on the ice and the rubber is covered by the Isles goalie.
12:45: Nice breakout by the line of Sterling, Vitale and Staal.
14:46: Tangradi gets two cracks on the puck at the doorstep but can't solve Koskinen!
15:20: Fantastic PP for the Pens even though they didn't score. They sent five blasts Koskinen's way.
16:51: Kennedy just got his second shot of this PP. The Pens forward has seven goals and 14 points in 21 career games against the Isles.
17:24: Micheal Haley is trying to mix it up with Zbynek Michalek, who's having none of it. The Isles forward is getting sent to the box for his efforts. Pens on the PP!
19:03: PA Parenteau hi-sticks a puck past Johnson, which is immediately and vehemently waved off by the ref stationed behind the net. No goal. A further review confirms the initial ruling.
20:00: They're off on the Island!
7:02 PM: Chris Conner and Ben Lovejoy are scratched for the Pens. Here's their lines:
Brent Johnson gets the nod between the pipes. Mikko Koskinen is starting in net for the Isles.
6:54 PM: Also, defenseman Brooks Orpik, the Penguins' longest tenured player, is playing in his 500th NHL game tonight!
6:50 PM: Quick pregame fact – the Pens and the Isles enter tonight's game with a combined 519 man-games lost due to injury. The Isles have suffered an NHL-high 357 man-games lost due to injury.
6:45 PM: The Penguins arrived in New York last night after their awesome 2-1 overtime victory over Los Angeles at CONSOL Energy Center, powered by Jordan Staal's game-winning goal.
They face the Islanders at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island in just minutes and will head to Manhattan Saturday afternoon to prepare for Sunday's matinee tilt against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
Hopefully the guys will have what Jay-Z and Alicia Keys dubbed an "empire state of mind" against the Isles tonight in what's sure to be an emotionally-charged game, after the shenanigans that took place the last time these two squads faced off on Feb. 2. See below:
