Penguins-Islanders In-Game Blog

0:00: That's game! Johnson preserves his shutout despite having to leave the ice early with a fighting major Actually, Johnson loses his shutout thanks to a game misconduct. But he said post-game that it was worth it. The Pens win, 3-0!

0:16: And with Johnson and Dipietro serving penalties, Marc-Andre Fleury will finish this game in net.

0:16:
OH MY!!!! We have our first goalie fight in CONSOL Energy Center history! Seriouly! Johnson and Dipietro go toe-to-toe and Johnny knocked him down with one incredible left hook! This place is going crazy!!!

0:41:
Talbot shoots the puck into an empty net! That's his 100th point of his career! Congrats to him! Penguins 3, Islanders 0

1:24:
The Islanders have pulled their goalie, in an attempt to throw everything they have at the Penguins.

4:02:
Pens back to full strength.

4:30: Huge defensive play by Talbot to intercept a pass and clear it out of the Pens zone as the Isles' PP wound down.

6:20: Rupp's definitely getting well-acquainted with the box tonight. He just got two for tripping. Pens on the PK.

8:22: Nielsen's stick gets caught in Johnny's skate and Johnny gets dragged to the ground. No penalty is called on the play.

10:24: An absolutely beautiful save by Johnny! Travis Hamonic's shot through traffic finds its way to the Pens goalie, but his glove snakes up and snags the puck.

11:46: A weird-angle shot from Okposo rolls up Johnny and bounces up and out of play.

14:07: Isles back to full strength.

16:25: The Pens managed to hold onto the puck for a good 25 seconds on a delayed penalty call. Konopka is going off for hooking. Pens on the PP!

18:55: Pens back to full strength.

19:32: Staal deftly intercepts a pass on the blue line, and wisely chooses to just clear the puck as the Pens had begun the period shorthanded.

20:00: The final frame has commenced!

THIRD PERIOD

A little intermission fun. Not going to lie, I can't stop giggling at these pics.

SECOND PERIOD NOTES
- Engelland leads the Pens with four hits.
- Talbot is 6-of-8 in the faceoff dot.
- Staal leads the Pens forwards with 15:14 of ice time.

0:00: The first 40 minutes are officially in the books. Pens still lead 2-0 and have a 16-12 advantage in shots.

0:46: Adams gets a great shorthanded chance. After he shoots, the puck travels up DiPietro's stick and bounces on the top of the net as the Isles goalie wildly scrambles.

1:17: As Rupp and Dylan Reese race for a puck, Rupp lays a hit on the Isles defenseman as he picks up the rubber in the corner. Rupp is getting whistled for boarding on the play. Pens on the PK.

1:51: Johnson makes a big save on Frans Nielson's point-blank shot from the faceoff dot.

3:24: Jeffrey tries to David Beckham a puck out of the air, but he's unsuccessful on his attempt.

5:23: Pens back to full strength.

6:57: Now the Isles will head to the PP for 1:11.

7:46: Now Staal is heading to the box for tripping. We're going 4-on-4 for 49 seconds.

8:12: DiPietro better be thanking his posts right about now! Jeffrey and Kunitz get a 2-on-1 chance, and Jeffrey dishes a perfect pass in Kunitz's wheelhouse. No. 14's shot rings loudly off the post and out of danger.

8:57: Conner wheels out from the corner and whips a shot at DiPietro. The rebound bounces out to Adams in the slot, but Parenteau gets a stick on him. The Isles forward is going to the box for hooking. Pens on the PP!

10:56: Isles are back to full strength.

13:06: Okposo is getting a pair for tripping. Pens on the PP!

14:54: After Letang is crushed into the boards by Comeau, Parenteau comes THIS close to capitalizing on a loose puck in the crease. Huge save by Johnny in the ensuing scramble.

17:05: Konopka's no stranger to dropping the gloves, as his 167 penalty minutes are the most in the NHL while his 17 fights are second.

17:23: Rupp and Konopka are going at it at center ice! The fight drags on for a while, with Rupp finally tackling Konopka to the ground!

19:18: Ah, what a tease!!! Talbot rips a shot that hit the top right post and bounced down and hit the bottom left post before deflecting out. The goal horn even went off, but play continued.

20:00: And they're off!

SECOND PERIOD

FIRST PERIOD NOTES
- Martin already has two assists.
- Michalek also has an assist and leads with 8:18 of ice time.
- Talbot won all five of his faceoffs that period.

0:00: The first 20 minutes are in the books. Pens have a 2-0 lead and hold a 7-5 advantage in shots.

0:48: Kennedy's in the box for hooking. Pens on the PK.

1:08: Tavares makes a nifty backhand pass to a streaking PA Parenteau, whose shot is turned aside by Johnny.

2:21: Jeffrey's shot goes up and out of play. Luckily, there's no delay of game call.

4:42: And now Johnson clears the puck out of the Pens zone from behind the net! That man can do it all.

5:37: The Isles get a couple of quick shots right off the bat, but Johnny stands tall.

5:51: Godard in the box for holding. Pens on the PK.

6:50: Similar to Kennedy's goal, Kunitz skated the puck down the right side of the ice and lifted a backhand shot at DiPietro that trickled in short side! Penguins 2, Islanders 0

8:21: Rupp skates down the ice, with DiPietro letting off a long rebound on the shot. Conner quickly pounces on the puck, but DiPietro robs him!

10:40: Tangradi picks up a loose puck off the boards in the Pens zone and wheels down the ice for a 2-on-1 rush with Craig Adams. Tangradi opts to shoot and his shot is turned aside by DiPietro.

11:52: With 20 seconds left on the PP, Kennedy rips a shot from the right faceoff circle that sneaks short side past DiPietro for the score! Penguins 1, Islanders 0

12:19: The Isles are pretty aggressive on the PK. They're not giving much room to Goligoski and Letang (Cinco Ocho) to work the points.

13:32: A scrum ensues by the Pittsburgh bench after the hit, and Zenon Konopka is getting a four-minute penalty for roughing. Two minutes are cancelled out by Rupp getting whistled for roughing as well. Pens on the PP for two minutes.

13:45: Talbot just crushed an Islander back in the Pittsburgh zone as the Pens broke the puck out. He then sprinted down the ice and laid another huge hit on Blake Comeau, who had to be attended to by trainers. He skated off of his own accord and seems to be fine.

16:27: Tangradi just had his first NHL shift since the end of October! Hear him talk more about his opportunity:

17:19: Talbot just found some space in front of the net to wheel in for a shot, but he's stopped by DiPietro. The Pens can't capitalize on the juicy rebound.

18:02: The line of Kunitz, Jeffrey and Dupuis was able to keep the Isles contained in their zone for a long time on that last shift. Nice work by the Pens.

19:07: The Isles are whistled for icing. Faceoff coming by DiPietro.

20:00: It's a hockey night in Pittsburgh!!!

FIRST PERIOD

7:00 PM: Here's the Pens lines.

Kunitz-Jeffrey-Dupuis
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Rupp-Talbot-Conner
Tangradi-Adams-Godard

Orpik-Letang
Martin-Michalek
Goligoski-Engelland

Johnson in goal. Rick DiPietro will start in the cage for the Isles.

7:00 PM: Brent Johnson is getting the nod between the pipes tonight for the Pens! Yeah Johnny! I've obviously gotta play some Led Zeppelin in his honor, as it's his favorite band.

6:45 PM: Lots of pre-game activity to report, as head coach Dan Bylsma, center Jordan Staal and the recently recalled (as of this morning) Eric Tangradi spoke to the media outside the locker room around 5 p.m.

Staal will be playing in tonight's game despite being assessed a match penalty in Tuesday's game against the New York Rangers. Head to today's Penguins Report to see what he and Bylsma had to say about the situation.

Tangradi is donning the black and gold jersey for the first time since October. He's developed his game both physically and emotionally in the ensuing months, and is excited to get another chance to prove himself.

While Tangradi is suiting up, Mark Letestu, Arron Asham and Evgeni Malkin will not be playing tonight.
