Penguins-Islanders In-Game Blog

0:00: That's game! The Penguins top the Islanders 1-0 in what turned out to be quite the battle!

3:52: Isles back to full strength.

6:11: And now it's the Isles heading to the box, as Matt Martin is getting two for elbowing. Pens on the PP!

6:56: Pens back to full strength.

8:48: Strong defensive play by Adams to bat a loose puck out of the air and out of danger. Flower was looking around for it and didn't know where it was.

9:03: Letang's going to the box for tripping. Pens on the PK.

11:24: After Jeffrey wins the offensive zone faceoff, Lovejoy rips a shot that bounces off Poulin to Asham. Asham turns and whips a shot that flies to a crashing Craig Adams, who stuffs it for the score! Penguins 1, Islanders 0

12:42: Tavares is out of the box. Isles back to full strength.

14:51: Tavares is getting a pair for hooking. Pens on the PP!

16:06: Michalek's shot from the point hits the skate of Okposo and proceeds to bounce on the top of the net! All Poulin could do was watch! No. 4 nearly got his first goal of the season there!

18:48: Kunitz rips a shot that flies over the net with some juice.

20:00: And we're off! Who do you think's going to score the first goal? My money's on Max...

THIRD PERIOD

SECOND PERIOD NOTES
- The Pens exploded for 14 shots that period.
- Talbot leads the team with five shots so far this game.
- Letestu has won all six of his faceoffs thus far.

0:00: That'll do it for the second. The Pens are now outshooting the Isles by a margin of 23-19, with the score still 0-0.

1:07: Now Rupp and Conner get a great scoring opportunity, but no dice.

2:06: Kunitz carries up the right side of the wall and attempts to bury the puck stick-side on Poulin, but the Isles goalie is able to get a pad on it.

5:07: This game has morphed into a goaltending duel. Fleury and Poulin are both playing unbelievably for their teams.

6:33: Huge series of scoring chances for the Pens! I dont know how Poulin managed to keep the puck out of the cage, but he did.

Schremp and DiPietro playing catch (left), Talbot captured skating by a sign in his honor (right)

9:56: SO close! Talbot capitalizes on an Isles turnover in front of Poulin and is able to backhand a shot off. Poulin bobbles it, his stick flying high into the air, but is eventually able to corral it.

11:33: Grabner unleases a quick shot from behind the net that comes at Fleury at an odd angle, but Flower's able to make the save.

12:40: Blake Comeau digs the puck out down low and dishes to Jeremy Colliton, whose shot is scooped by Flower. The Isles have been coming out hard this period.

TK (left) after his first-period fight

15:34: Okposo whips a shot that rings off the inside of the post, but thankfully deflects into the corner.

16:40: Conner works the puck deep in the Isles zone with some agile moves, but it's eventually cleared.

19:15: Kyle Okposo comes flying out of nowhere to block TK's shot right in front of Poulin.

20:00: Here we go!

SECOND PERIOD

FIRST PERIOD NOTES
- There were four fighting majors handed out within the first two minutes.
- Letestu (3) and Talbot (2) have both won all of their faceoffs.
- Letang leads all Pens with 8:20 of ice time.

0:00: That'll do it for the first. We're still scoreless and the Isles have outshot the Pens by a 12-10 margin.

1:59: HUGE series of stops by Flower that culminated with him stopping Frans Nielsen with a beauty of a pad save!

The world's largest goalie mask is still at CONSOL Energy Center!

4:21: Michael Grabner wheels down the ice with two Pens defenders escorting him. Martin's active stick allows Fleury to step up and pokecheck the puck out of danger.

6:45: Pens back to full strength. The Isles are still coming hard and fast at Flower, but he's come up big every time.

8:45: Orpik just got two for tripping. Pens on the PK.

10:34: Isles are back to full strength after a strong Pens PP.

12:39: Pens are on the PP after PA Parenteau heads to the box for goaltender interference after crashing into Fleury.

13:18: The usually stay-at-home Brooks Orpik just carried the puck down the ice and flipped a pass to himself that he chased after hard.

14:49: The Pens have come out flying to start the period. Plus they're strong on the puck and have been making good decisions with it.

15:05: Max wants that goal! He just had two great scoring chances on his last shift.

17:11: Staal whips a pass to Dupuis, who's planted in front. He one-times Staal's pass quickly at Poulin, but the goalie makes the save.

18:07: And we've got another one! In round 2, Arron Asham and Zenon Konopka drop the gloves off a faceoff in the Isles zone. In a move that would make Russ Tyler proud, Asham pulls Konopka's jersey over his head to get the decision after a spirited bout.

19:39: And the gloves have dropped early! The 5-foot-11, 183-pound Tyler Kennedy goes head-to-head with the 6-foot-2, 208-pound Travis Hamonic, and the Pens forward definitely wins. They showed the fight in slo-mo replay, and TK landed at least three square punches to Hamonic's head.

20:00: They're off here at CONSOL Energy Center!

FIRST PERIOD

6:55 PM: Ben Lovejoy is in on defense. No other changes to the Pens lines:

Kunitz-Letestu-Dupuis
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Rupp-Talbot-Conner
Adams-Jeffrey-Asham

Orpik-Letang
Martin-Michalek
Goligoski-Lovejoy

Fleury in goal. Kevin Poulin is in net for the Islanders.

6:50 PM: Head coach Dan Bylsma announced today that Evgeni Malkin will not be attending the All-Star game in order to recover from a sinus infection/illness. This follows the announcement made Monday that Sidney Crosby will also not be attending while he continues to recuperate from his concussion.

6:45 PM: Tonight's tilt against the Islanders marks the Penguins' last game before the NHL All-Star break. While plenty of the Penguins players plan on relaxing and enjoying some time off, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and defenseman Kris Letang will be heading to Raleigh this weekend to partake in the festivities.

And so I've decided to play a little video in honor of Flower and Tanger before they take off. Usually the music selection in our blogs is best left to my coworker Sam Kasan, but I couldn't help myself with this one. A pretty obvious choice, but hey, they are All-Stars!
