Four High School Players Honored by Penguins, Highmark
The Penguins once again honored four high school hockey players for their excellent performances this season.

Bethel Park’s Mike Shipley, Butler’s Jake Whann, Elizabeth Forward’s Justin Delmaster and North Allegheny’s Ryan Worsena were honored during the Penguins’ 4-1 win over Detroit Tuesday night as Highmark High School Hockey Players of the Month for December.

Worsena, a senior forward who is one of North Allegheny’s captains, had six goals and nine points in four games – including two game-winning goals.

Four high school players were honored as December Players of the Month (Pittsburgh Penguins)
“It’s special,” Worsena said. “Just compared to all the other great players that are out there, there are just so many other people out there that you could say should come out here and be honored.”

This is just the beginning of a special week for Worsena, as his North Allegheny team will be taking part in the PIHL’s High School Hockey Outdoor Charity Series, a high school version of the NHL’s “Winter Classic.”

“This is probable the biggest (week) I’ve ever had,” Worsena said. “Just coming out here and watching the game, and then having the outdoor game on Friday is awesome.”

Shipley, a senior defenseman who serves as Bethel Park’s captain, contributed a goal and three assists and spearheaded a defensive effort that helped the Blackhawks hold opponents to just three goals in three games in December.

“It means a lot,” Shipley said. “It’s a cool award. Our captain last year got it, and I didn’t think I’d get it this year because I had to switch to defense, but it was nice to get it.”

Whann, a junior defenseman who is captain of Butler’s team, chipped in four assists and provided exceptional leadership and two-way play for the Tornado.

“I was definitely excited that I was nominated,” Whann said. “I appreciate that my coach nominated me. It was fun to be able to go out and be recognized.”

Delmaster, a senior forward, exploded for seven goals and 12 points in four games to lead the Elizabeth Forward attack.

“It’s just a great honor to be player of the month,” Delmaster said. “It’s cool to come down to CONSOL (Energy Center). It’s my first time here. Detroit is a big rival, and it’s always exciting to watch a good game.”

The Penguins and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield honor high school players of the month four times each season.

The Penguins are proud supporters of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), as well as all local amateur hockey.
