The Pittsburgh Penguins have unveiled the World’s Largest Goalie Mask on the main concourse near the First Niagara Club at CONSOL Energy Center.

Starting with Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Wild at 7 p.m., Pens fans will have a chance to see and take photos next to the giant mask – which is 9.5 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet deep.

The mask is the creation of renowned artist David Arrigo, whose work has been featured at the Olympics, the U.S. Open and the Super Bowl. Arrigo has painted masks for several NHL goaltenders, including the Penguins’ Brent Johnson.

The display is presented by Bayer MaterialScience. Soon the area also will feature a “Science of Sport” kiosk with video showing many scientific aspects of hockey and other sports.

“Bayer MaterialScience is proud to be associated with the Pittsburgh Penguins because of their innovative spirit,” said Robert Kumpf, Bayer MaterialScience Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. “As innovators ourselves, we understand the important role that science plays in sports at every level. We hope the ‘Science of Sport’ display at CONSOL Energy Center will help us explain the connection between science and sports in a fun and educational way.”

The materials used to construct the mask are protected by a high-performance polyurethane coating containing raw materials produced by Bayer MaterialScience. This basecoat serves as the foundation for both the white background and the artist’s colors. A final polyurethane clearcoat over the artwork provides additional protection and durability.
