Pens: Letestu can't find the back of the net, and the Isles will get a 2-1 shootout win over the Pens.
Isles: Parenteau answers right back as he speeds in on Fleury and goes top-shelf for the score.
Pens: GENO!!! He turns DiPietro inside-out to give himself a wide-open net for the goal!
Isles: Fleury pounces on Tavares' shot to keep the Pens in it!
Pens: DiPietro saves Sid's snapshot.
Isles: Frans Nielsen goes to his backhand and elevates the puck over Fleury for the score.
Pens: Redemption for Letang!!! The puck BARELY trickles through DiPietro's five-hole for the goal!
Isles: Rob Schremp approaches Fleury at a snail-like pace and stuffs it past Flower for the score.
0:00: We're going to a shootout. That'll do it for Crosby's amazing streak. It ends at 25 games.
0:10: Whoa! An Islanders player just got Kunitz in a headlock and pulled him down to the ice after DiPietro makes a big save and No. 14 tries to jab the puck loose.
0:36: Letang and Malkin have been feeding each other for one-timers for the majority of this PP. The puck deflects out of play and the faceoff's going outside the zone.
1:14: The Isles just took a penalty for too many men. The Pens will finish this OT period with a 4-on-3 PP!
1:30: Goligoski sent a perfect cross-ice pass to Paul Martin, who had dipped down in front of the Isles net but No. 7's blast is stopped!! Great chance for the Pens!
3:22: The Isles just got a 3-on-1 after the Pens had spent the previous minute and a half in New York's zone!
4:33: Bylsma's starting with the two-headed monster up top.
5:00: FYI, in overtime the teams skate 4-on-4.
0:00: We're going to overtime as the buzzer sounds with the Pens and the Isles tied, 1-1. Sid will have five minutes to extend his streak to 26 games!
0:35: The Isles stick all of their top guns on the ice, but they're no match for Fleury as he corrals the puck. Crosby will go out to take the faceoff.
4:20: Love that glove! Fleury robs Milan Jurcina after the Isles forward rips a blast from the right circle.
5:01: The camera just caught Crosby signalling to Geno to go forward off the faceoff. They love pulling that play.
7:01: Letang was on the ice, so he's going to take it. He seems to have DiPietro beat, but backhands it high and wide.
7:01: After Talbot nearly scores on DiPietro, an Islander gloves the puck in the crease -- total no-no! Penalty shot for the Pens!!!
9:28: DiPietro is thanking his lucky stars right now!!! He went to clear the puck out of his end, but it went in front of the net directly to the stick of a crashing Kennedy. TK just missed the wide-open net! Pretty sure DiPietro just made the sign of the cross.
12:38: Fleury comes out and challenges Michael Grabner, giving him no angle whatsoever to shoot at.
14:04: We're back to full strength.
16:06: Fleury slides across the crease in a nice show of athleticism to rob Rob Schremp!
16:38: Letang gets whistled for interference. Pens right back on the PK.
I thought that, like Crosby, Tavares wore his birth year as his number. But I was wrong, as the Isles center was born in 1990.
17:46: We're back to full strength!
18:38: Never good to see Z in the box, as he's second on the team in shorthanded time on ice, averaging 3:54 a game (just one second behind Orpik, who leads the Pens).
19:46: Michalek's stick gets accidently tangled up in the feet of an Islander and he's getting two for tripping. Pens on the PK to start the period.
20:00: We're entering the final stretch in a tie game!
Head coach Dan Bylsma spoke to the media prior to the game. Watch what he had to say while we wait for the third to start:
SECOND PERIOD NOTES
- Crosby leads all Pens with 16:06 of ice time.
- Adams has only lost one of his six faceoffs.
- Sid's dominating in the dot as well - he's won 10 of 13 draws.
0:00: That's it for the second. Pens have 24 shots to the Isles' 17. We're tied 1-1 after the first 40 minutes.
1:00: Huge defensive play by the captain! He backchecked hard to be the lone white jersey back to break up an Isles 2-on-1 opportunity! Crosby really is the total package. Fleury gave him a little love tap after the play.
2:18: Asham unleashes his cannon of a shot -- somehow DiPietro followed the streaking puck to make the save.
3:27: BZZZZZZZZZZ!!! The buzz line strikes! Kennedy wheels down the outside of the ice and whips a shot at DiPietro, which bounces right to the stick of a crashing Chris Conner!! Penguins 1, Islanders 1
3:52: Solid PK by the Isles as both teams are back to full strength.
4:11: Malkin sweeps a shot at DiPietro but it skids through the crease and into the corner!
5:59: Things are gettin' a little chippy. Matt Martin's getting two for boarding as he launches Max Talbot into the boards from behind. Pens on the PP!
7:08: Both teams are back to full strength.
8:42: It's interesting to see who Bylsma puts out for his four skaters. Right now it's Sid, Geno, Goligoski and Engelland.
9:10: Jon Sim knocks Orpik down after Fleury smothers the puck. Orpik takes exception, and the two tussle for a bit. They're each getting roughing minors, so we're 4-on-4 for the second time tonight.
9:28: This game has been flying by. Crosby has now won 8-of-10 faceoffs, while TK leads with three shots on goal. I feel like TK's going to get one tonight. It'd only be fitting, as he scored his first NHL goal on this very team.
11:27: Crosby wins the faceoff in the Isles' zone straight back to Michalek, who one-times a blast at DiPietro. Bylsma has Sid, Geno and Kunitz out up top together.
14:48: Dupuis heads back onto the ice, Pens are back to full strength.
16:00: DiPietro just iced the puck. Whoops.
16:48: One of the Pens' best penalty killers is heading to the box for hi-sticking. Pens on the PK.
18:35: Huge save by Flower on Tavares as the center got in close to whip a backhand at the Pens goalie.
19:26: The Isles find the back of the net just 34 seconds in. Josh Bailey grabs a rebound off the pad of Fleury and elevates it into the net. Islanders 1, Penguins 0
20:00: The second is underway. Hopefully the Pens can take the momentum and run with it like they did last night.
Yinz love da Guins!!! Katie O'Malley of PensTV caught up with Pittsburgh native Jim Shearer:
FIRST PERIOD NOTES
- Orpik has a team-leading three hits.
- Crosby and Letang both have exactly 7:36 of ice time.
- Sid has won 67 percent of his faceoffs (4-of-6).
0:00: The first frame is over. The game is scoreless and the momentum hasn't swung in any specific direction, but the Pens do hold a 12-9 advantage in shots.
1:38: The 4-on-4 is over. Back to full strength.
2:36: 26 was so close I couild taste it!!! Kennedy and Crosby go down 2-on-1 and TK slides the puck over to Sid, who draws DiPietro out and rips a shot that rings off the crossbar.
2:56: Malkin sets the puck on a silver platter for Letang. His quick blast from the point is smothered by DiPietro.
3:35: Parenteau and Kunitz are each getting a pair, and we're going to play some 4-on-4 hockey.
3:55: The line of P.A. Parenteau, John Tavares and Matt Moulson just had a fantastic shift for the Isles, and now it looks like there's going to be some penalties called.
5:49: Lots of back-and-forth play, but no huge scoring chances for either side.
Speaking of Trottier, he was at the Pens' alumni scrimmage on Tuesday.
10:20: Konopka's no stranger to the sin bin, that's for sure. With his 5-minute major, he's now No. 1 in the league with 128 penalty minutes.
10:53: Zenon Konopka and Craig Adams are going at it in front of Fleury! The refs instantly jumped to action, shoving the net out of the way to give the guys some room. We're calling this one a draw.
12:28: Rick DiPietro is in net for the Isles, by the way. Alex Goligoski netted the game-winning goal against him when the two teams last faced off on Oct. 15.
13:06: Sid almost intercepts a pass that's intended for an Isles D man, but the blueliner recovers and dumps it back into the Pens' zone.
15:42: Just heard that a bunch of the Isles players got their hair cut into Mohawks as a team-bonding ritual. Glad they didn't bleach their hair.
17:17: Fleury's stick flies out of his hand after he stops a blast from the point.
18:35: The Isles have come out flying.
20:00: They're off in Long Island!
7:00 PM: Engelland is in on defense. The rest of the Pens lines are the same:
Fleury gets the nod between the pipes.
6:50 PM: For all of the latest stories and videos on the big event happening at Heinz Field on Saturday (it's only three days away -- can you believe that?!), check out Winter Classic Central.
The coolest story of the day? The unique but awesome relationship between the Pens and the Steelers. And did you know Paul Martin was a star quarterback in high school???
6:45 PM: Yes, the Pens are still playing hockey games amongst all this Winter Classic excitement as they take on the Islanders tonight in New York.
The team did not skate this morning as they had a game last night, but the Pens did announce this morning that Mike Comrie is out 3-4 months after undergoing hip surgery. They also re-assigned goaltender John Curry to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
