4:18 PM:
Coachspeak with Dan Bylsma…

On when Jordan Staal will start practicing:
I don’t have an answer for you there.

On if Staal’s progress is taking longer than originally thought:
The important part of his injury, we have to make sure it heels. The usage of the hand, we have to see more healing than you would if it was a finger. He continues to show healing. He showed more the last x-ray. He has another one schedule, I’m not sure when.

On if Staal is skating:
He’s been doing activities on and off the ice.

On Talbot:
Max had a maintenance day. He was dealing with bumps and bruises. (Saturday) will be an off day, but he’ll be on the ice.

On if Kunitz’s playing is soreness:
He’s been banged up. It’s a situation where you don’t want to digress with being banged up. Hopefully, the rest the past few days he’ll be improving.

On how if HBO will expose Penguins injuries:

Not really. You saw Deryk Engelland get stitched up. That’s what HBO has access to. It’s not a different stance from what we’ve taken. They have access to that area.

On HBO changing perception of the team on injuries:
I didn’t think of it when I watched it. I know they shot more footage than they showed. It didn’t dawn on me. It’s a different side than we’ve given you in the past.

On the Penguins fighting:
For the last three years we’ve wanted to play a physical, hard-nosed brand of hockey. If that leads to where we are with fighting majors, that’s not a goal or a mindset or what we want to start off with. We want to be a physical team. We want to grind you down. Part of it is the way we play, part of it is the physicality of the players. We want to be a team that is there for each other. Sometimes that leads to nothing. Sometimes that leads to majors.

On if he’s created the bond through fighting:
I didn’t like fighting when I played. That’s a group in there that has a mindset of how we want to play. We also have a mindset hang those jerseys together, being one and being there for each other. If someone is gets a tap on the shoulder because someone is taking liberties, they know that’s going to be the case.

On how he addresses the team postgame:
I don’t talk to my team after every game. After wins we usually have a conversation. We have things that we do as a team after every win. After a loss, sometimes I don’t talk at all. A lot of times the players say all the things that need to be said. Sometimes I do talk. Over the course of 82 games, I don’t talk just to open my mouth. I tried to have a purpose and reason.

On if the HBO show revealed something he didn’t want:
When I saw (the footage of himself grading players with GM Ray Shero), the players know and are involved in that at different times. They know what their foundations are. They know after a game, at different times of the year, they know the coaches do it.

On the show:
I like the way our guys acted. I like the way they showed our team. Seeing myself, regardless of whether it was good or bad, the hair goes up on the back of your neck.

On the contrast between Washington and Pittsburgh:
The show had two different ends of the spectrum in terms of being on a roll and not being on one. It makes for good drama I guess. Teams go through ebbs and flows. At times you don’t know where a team is at unless you see them on TV. We get to see Washington at that particular time. It doesn’t diminish all the games they won or how good they are. It was drama, but you’ll see us having two losses in the next episode.

1:44 PM:
Check out the brand new helmets that Marc-Andre Fleury and Brent Johnson will be sporting for the 2011 Bridgestone Winter Classic.

11:30 AM:
Chris Kunitz is not on the ice for Pittsburgh. He missed the past two games with an undisclosed injury. Maxime Talbot is also not skating for the Penguins. Due to the missing players, there were some interesting line combos at practice.

Asham-Crosby-Dupuis
Cooke-Malkin-Engelland
Conner-Letestu-Kennedy
Rupp-Adams-Godard

Orpik-Letang
Martin-Michalek
Goligoski-Lovejoy

Looks like the Pens finally found that winger for Malkin, Deryk Engelland!!!!

11:23 AM:
The Pens announced that there will be public skates at the second outdoor rink at the Community Rink at Stage AE.

10:59 AM:
In honor of Lemieux's 1984 scrap, let's look back at the Pens current captain, Sidney Crosby, getting physical.

CROSBY vs. ZIDLICKY

CROSBY vs. BALLARD

CROSBY vs. McLEAN

CROSBY vs. FERENCE

10:53 AM:
The rosters have been finalized for the Alumni Winter Classic Game. The tickets are already sold out to see the likes of Lemieux, Rick Tocchet, Kevin Stevens and Peter Bondra on the ice for what will surely be a spirited competition.

10:46 AM:
Lemieux wasn't just the world's most talented hockey player in the history of the world, he was willing to drop the gloves when needed. Gary Lupul found that out back in Mario's first month in the NHL in 1984. It's a shame that Lemieux didn't brawl in the staff game. I would never bet against the big guy.

10:42 AM:
The Penguins will be back on the ice 11 a.m. following a day off on Thursday. Pittsburgh is in the midst of an odd game-less stretch. The team doesn't play again until Monday against Phoenix, a rare weekend of no action for the Pens.

10:29 AM:
Let's start the day with one of my all-time favorite songs. Any time this song comes on at a bar I can't help but sing very loudly and very out of key.

And I still can't believe that the wolf-like singer, Adam Duritz, dated Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Winona Ryder and Gwen Stefani. Talk about outkicking your coverage.

Anyways, here is the Counting Crows with "Mr. Jones."
