0:00: The Pens barrel to their 11th consecutive win as they hold off a Leafs rally to win the game, 5-2. Shots on goal were 26-25 in favor of the Pens.
2:54: There's that third line again! Letestu just showed great patience on there to tally his second goal of the night. Versteeg laid down to try to block the shot, but Letestu kept the puck, moved around him and blasted a shot top-shelf past Gustavsson. Penguins 5, Maple Leafs 2
4:45: Fleury just made an incredible save to keep the Penguins up by two. A Leaf blasted a shot from the slot, but Fleury came out to challenge it and covered the puck.
7:19: Cooke is out of the box! Pittsburgh escapes that power play unscathed.
9:29: Kessel has been all over the ice tonight, as he rips a shot at Fleury. Toronto is throwing puck after puck at the Pens netminder so far this period.
10:05: Matt Cooke, one of the Penguins' best penalty killers, is getting two for tripping.
11:22: Grabovski smolders a wrister from the top of the circle up and over the shoulder of Fleury. Penguins 4, Leafs 2
13:09: Crosby is out of the box! We're back to full strength.
15:22: Pens are still on the PK. The first minor ended with the Leafs goal, so the second one will now start. 1:35 left on the Toronto power play.
15:24: Tyler Bozak is able to collect a rebound and backhand it top shelf over Fleury. Penguins 4, Leafs 1
16:17: Things are getting chippy here in Pittsburgh. After Crosby, Martin and Michalek start mixing it up with some Leafs behind Fleury, Godard makes his presence known and starts taking it up with Jay Rosehill. Crosby is getting four minutes, Pens on the PK.
16:57: Komisarek is in his second fight of the night, this time with Mike Rupp.
17:23: Kaberle's blast is gloved by Fleury.
19:31: Crosby dekes Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who has relieved Gustavsson, out of his pads, but his shot slides across the crease and skitters harmlessly into the corner.
20:00: And we're off!
SECOND PERIOD NOTES
- Crosby has now won 14-of-19 faceoffs for a 74 percent success rate.
- He's now extended his point streak to 17 games and has scored 11 goals over the past six games.
- Kunitz and Martin are both a team-leading plus-3.
0:00: That's it for the second! Unbelievable period for the Pens, who will take a 4-0 lead into the final frame. They hold a 24-10 shots-on-goal advantage over Toronto.
0:15: Conner and Versteeg are getting two minutes each for slashing, and we're ending the period with some four-on-four hockey.
0:41: Kessel's out of the box and proceeds to rip a hard blast at Fleury, who makes the save.
3:12: We're on the power play as Kessel gets two for slashing.
3:57: Asham and Komisarek are dropping the gloves. Komisarek's got a few inches on Asham, but it's a pretty even bout.
4:50: The crowd is starting an "MVP! MVP!" chant for Sid...
5:14: Kunitz jump-starts another two-on-one. He decides not to shoot and slides the puck over to Crosby, who gets down on one knee as he one-times the rubber past Gustavsson! Second goal of the night for the captain and the crowd is deafening in their applause!! Penguins 4, Leafs 0
6:47: Third line's the charm! As the trio is working the puck in the offensive zone in their trademark fashion, Kennedy is hauled down by a Leafs defenseman but manages to keep the puck in front of the net for Letestu to jump on and stuff in the net! Penguins 3, Leafs 0
8:22: Absolutely beautiful play by Pascal Dupuis! He capitalizes on a turnover to clear the puck between the legs of a Toronto D-man, fakes the pass to Kunitz, and shoots top-shelf over Gustavsson! Shortie for No. 9! Penguins 2, Leafs 0
8:47: Tomas Kaberle finds some time and space to skate the puck in on Fleury, who challenges him and makes the save.
9:35: Godard is getting whistled for boarding after he checks Mikhail Grabovski into the boards. The Pens are heading to the PK.
If Crosby's 25th goal or Engelland's fight hasn't quite gotten you to the maximum pump-up level, perhaps this video will:
12:01: Kessel, who's parked in the slot, JUST misses a pass from behind the net. Solid defensive work by the Pens to deny him the puck.
12:54: Conner fights through two Leafs defenders in an impressive display of acceleration, but can't make it through to get a shot off. Both teams are back to full strength.
14:49: And the Leafs are getting whistled for too many men on the ice, for the second time tonight. Orr is serving the bench minor. Pens on the PP!
15:07: Paul Martin just displayed some impressive mobility as he skated in and got through a swarm of Leafs defenders to get a shot on Gustavsson.
16:17: Kessel just had a nice scoring chance, but Fleury kicked his pad out at the last minute to turn his shot aside.
17:36: Conner just sprawled on the ice to block a hard blast from Komisarek. The shot bounced off his helmet! Yikes.
19:09: Letang skates behind the net and hooks a pass to Dupuis, whose shot is turned away by Gustavsson. The Pens have started this period off hard!
20:00: They're off and running here in the middle frame.
In honor of Engelland and Orr's fight tonight, here's a snapshot of their last bout, taken on Oct. 13 (photo credit goes to Getty images):
FIRST PERIOD NOTES
- Letestu leads the Pens with three shots on goal (one less than Toronto's total for the period).
- Crosby has won nine of his ten faceoffs.
- Letang has played a team-leading 8:07 minutes.
0:00: The first period comes to an end with the Penguins leading, 1-0. Pittsburgh also holds a 13-4 edge in shots.
2:35: The Pens are whistled for icing, and Bylsma is calling a timeout in order to give his players a short rest. They haven't been able to get a change.
4:13: REMATCH! Deryk Engelland and Colton Orr! Engelland starts by knocking off Orr's helmet with a solid punch! The crowd is absolutely loving it. Engelland is now two-for-two against Orr so far this season.
5:01: And the Pens managed to kill that one off, with Asham joining the rush straight out of the box and gets a shot off.
7:11: Former Penguin Colby Armstrong has been stirring it up so far this game. He just mixed it up with Arron Asham in front of Toronto's net, and Asham is going to get two for roughing. Pens on the PK!
9:12: Kennedy just sent a pretty pass to Conner, who tried to deke past Gustavsson but the "Monster" makes the save.
11:25: Wow. Let me try to describe this crazy play to you...Crosby sends a drop-pass to Kunitz, whose shot hits the far post. It ricochets back up to a crashing Crosby, whose shot then hits the NEAR post. But no worries, as the Penguins captain is almost past the goal line, he reaches behind him and shovels the puck in on his forehand! Penguins 1, Leafs 0
11:53: Great play by Maxime Talbot to read the play and break up a pass between two Leafs defenders. Both teams are now back to full strength.
13:10: Head coach Dan Bylsma has put speedsters Kennedy and Letestu up top to start. Those two can definitely use their wheels to their advantage with the extra open space.
13:48: Crosby skates out of the corner and tries to get a shot on net through three Leafs defenders, and will get called for roughing after the play. We're going to four-on-four hockey.
14:10: Actually, scratch that. The Leafs got whistled for too many men on the ice, and Phil Kessel will serve the bench minor. Pens are heading to the PP early!
14:34: There's a little bit of jostling going on in front of Fleury, but it's all cleared up and the faceoff is going to be in Toronto's end.
16:00: Nikolai Kulemin stretches and is able to intercept a Sidney Crosby pass, but Brooks Orpik steps up and denies the chance.
17:43: Conner, Letestu and Kennedy were just wreaking havoc in the Leafs' offensive zone.
19:24: Kunitz's shot hits the side of the net as the Pens get an early scoring chance!
20:00: We're underway here at CONSOL Energy Center, with the Pens hoping to win their seventh straight at home!
7:00 PM: No changes to the Pens lines tonight with Malkin still out. They are:
Fleury will get the start in net.
