Forward Maxime Talbot left the team’s Friday practice at Southpointe after being hit with a shot. Talbot was bruised by the shot and needed assistance off the ice.

Head coach Dan Bylsma said he will need further evaluation, but didn’t rule out Talbot playing in Columbus against the Blue Jackets Saturday night.

“He’s getting evaluated,” Bylsma said. “Right now he has a bruise. We’ll go from there. We’ll take him to Columbus (and evaluate him).”

When asked if Talbot still has a chance to play Saturday, Bylsma responded: “Definitely.”

Just in case, the Penguins are considering calling up a player from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Bylsma noted Dustin Jeffrey, Brett Sterling and Nick Johnson as possibilities.

Forward Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Brooks Orpik also missed practice.

"Malkin got banged up in the game and needed maintenance," Bylsma said. "We'll see for (Saturday). He's day-to-day.

"Brooks had an illness. So he didn't go on the ice."

One month ago, the Penguins lost center Jordan Staal after he was hit with a shot that broke his hand during a practice.

“That’s never fun to see anybody get hurt, especially at practice,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “Hopefully, everything is OK.”
