Penguins-Rangers In-Game Blog
0:00: The scorching-hot Pens improve to 9-0-1 and get their seventh-straight win as they top the Rangers, 3-1! Pittsburgh outshot New York, 27-26. Next up will be the Atlanta Thrashers on Thursday at 7 pm at CONSOL Energy Center.

2:04:
Lundqvist is heading to the bench for the extra attacker. Malkin just misses the empty net!

2:57:
Crosby blisters a shot at Lundqvist that nicks the goal post and deflects wide!

5:39:
We're back to 5-on-5 hockey.

6:10:
A couple of key saves by Fleury. He hadto juggle a bit to hold onto the puck, but managed to make the stop.

7:57:
Avery has had Crosby's number this past shift, but the Penguins captain is the one heading to the sin bin as he gets two for high sticking. We're playing 4-on-4 hockey though, as a Ranger is also headed to the box.

8:59:
Talbot makes a nice read and is able to intercept a Rangers pass for the clear! The Pens have emerged out of that penalty kill unscathed.

11:00:
Fedotenko's shot from the slot skips across the crease and into the corner. Goligoski is going to the box for tripping and the Pens find themselves right back on the PK.

11:49:
We're back to full strength!

12:42:
Boyle finds himself alone in front of the Pens net, but his shot deflects high and out of play.

13:35:
Whew, that was close. But Cooke, Orpik and Michalek all collapsed down and helped Fleury find the puck for a save on a good Rangers scoring chance.

14:26:
Engelland is going to get called as he ties up Gaborik and prevents him from getting a shot off. Pens on the PK.

16:40:
Michalek rockets a shot from the point that sneaks behind Lundqvist, but the Rangers netminder is able to collapse on top of the puck and make the save.

18:04:
A wide-open Avery can't handle a loose puck. Prust then makes a play back to Avery from below the goal line that Fleury handles.

20:00:
The third period is underway here in New York (I always want to add "concrete jungle where dreams are made of...")

THIRD PERIOD

SECOND PERIOD NOTES
- Orpik has a team-leading five hits
- Crosby has logged a team-leading 14:37 of ice time
- Dupuis has two assists so far tonight

0:00:
That'll do it for the second. Pittsburgh leads New York 3-1 and has the advantage in shots, 20-14.

2:36:
Kunitz puts on an incredible display of patience as he waits for the perfect opportunity to shoot. He draws Lundqvist out but his blast rings off the post.

3:41:
Marian Gaborik chimes in with a wrister from the top of the circle that beats Fleury glove side. Penguins 3, Rangers 1

4:57:
Kunitz's blast bounces right out to a crashing Dupuis, whose shot is turned aside by Lundqvist.

6:41:
Sean Avery challenges Kennedy in the ensuing faceoff as the two drop the gloves. The Pens have stolen the momentum and are running with it.

6:44:
Conner snatches up a rebound in the slot to ripple the twine! Beautiful work by Pittsburgh's third line! Penguins 3, Rangers 0

7:07:
With the helper, Sid has now extended his season-high scoring streak to 13 games!

7:59:
Crosby slides a backhand pass right to the stick of Letang, who rifles it past Lundqvist for the goal! Penguins 2, Rangers 0

9:25: Brian Boyle's shot goes just wide!

10:15:
Conner sneaks behind the defense but can't finish it off!

12:03:
Kunitz and Crosby find some open space that would have been a fantastic chance for Pittsburgh, but play gets whistled dead for a hand pass on the Pens.

13:36:
HUGE hit by Engelland on former Pen Ruslan Fedotenko!

14:01:
I swear Sid has eyes in the back of his head. He just made a fantastic no-look, behind-the-back pass to Malkin, but the Rangers end up taking it right back and Fleury makes the save.

15:01:
Crosby almost pots a nice re-direct, but can't solve Lundqvist.

17:56:
Crosby sets up Malkin on a 2-on-1 opportunity, but Geno's shot is turned aside.

18:39:
Letang is out of the box. The Pens are back to full strength.

19:19:
Cooke skates the puck out of the Pens zone and blasts a shot at Lundqvist, who chooses to hold onto the rubber. Probably a good idea as Cooke has two shorthanded goals so far this season.

20:00:
And they're off!

SECOND PERIOD

FIRST PERIOD NOTES
- Michalek leads the Pens in minutes-played with 8:12
- He also has the most blocked shots with three
- Crosby has won 6-of-11 faceoffs

0:00:
That'll do it for the first. The Pens will enter the second period with a 1-0 lead and 1:06 remaining in Letang's penalty. The Rangers hold the advantage in shots, 8-6.

0:54:
Callahan crashes the net (and into Fleury) on a give-and-go play, and Letang will get two for hooking the Rangers alternate captain. Pens on the PK.

1:42:
Rupp and Prust have some words while jostling for position, and it turns into a fight!

3:00:
The power play is over, both teams are back to full strength. The Rangers immediately get a 2-on-1 opportunity that Fleury is able to get a blocker on.

4:03: Crosby's blistering wrister is saved by Lundqvist, and the Rangers clear.

5:00:
Staal's hit on Letang knocks his helmet off for the second time tonight. Callahan is going to get a pair for boarding, Pens head to the power play!

5:40:
Rozsival's shot just misses the net! The Blueshirts have been forechecking hard these past few shifts.

7:45:
Dubinsky's shot skitters right across the crease, but it slides harmlessly into the corner.

8:48:
Martin and Michalek have been playing some SOLID shutdown defense these last couple of shifts. Those two have helped turned away some good Rangers scoring chances.

10:16:
Lundqvist with a blocker save on Kennedy.

12:07:
Marc Staal carries the puck deep and tries to stuff a wraparound past Fleury, who comes up with the save! The rebound squirts into the slot but the Pens clear.

14:50:
Talbot with the score! That happened so fast if you blinked, you missed it! Dupuis can't corral a bouncing puck in the slot, but it lands perfectly on Talbot's stick and he whips it up past Lundqvist for the goal. Penguins 1, Rangers 0

15:35:
Beautiful read by Michalek, who sent a long, cross-ice pass to a streaking Kunitz! Lundqvist makes the save.

16:45:
That third line of Conner, Letestu and Kennedy has really been working it these past few games. Some nice displays of cycling by that trio.

17:55:
Some all-out hustle from Max Talbot on that last shift.

19:19:
Letang loses his helmet, and his long hair just flows in the wind as he streaks back to retrieve a puck. Nice early pressure by Pittsburgh.

20:00:
Here we go!

FIRST PERIOD

7:05 PM:
Here are tonight's line combinations:

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Cooke-Malkin-Talbot
Conner-Letestu-Kennedy
Rupp-Adams-Godard

Orpik-Letang
Martin-Michalek
Engelland-Goligoski

Arron Asham, Ben Lovejoy and Mike Comrie are all scratches.

7:00 PM:
Marc-Andre Fleury gets the nod between the pipes for the Pens. Happy belated birthday to Flower, who turned 26 yesterday!

6:59 PM:
This contest is sure to be a physical, aggressive game, as the Rangers lead the NHL with 737 hits. Get ready for a wild ride folks!

6:55 PM: The Penguins face off tonight with Atlantic Division rival the New York Rangers at the historic Madison Square Garden, the oldest arena in the NHL. I wish I could be at such an epic building but will have to live vicariously through our Director of Content, Sam Kasan, and his mad picture-taking skills.
