Penguins-Rangers In-Game Blog

1:22:
And the Rangers win this crazy game. Callahan and Dubinsky got a two-on-one. Dubinsky made a great move to cause Michalek to fall down. That created a two-on-zero and Callahan easily put the puck past Fleury for the win. Rangers 3, Penguins 2

1:53:
Girardi's wrister from the right point was smothered by Fleury.

2:25:
Fleury just made a nice save on Gilroy to keep the Penguins alive.

4:23:
Goligoski dished the puck from the right point to a breaking Malkin, whose shot went just wide of Lundqvist.

OVERTIME

0:00:
And this game, which was pretty pedestrian throughout the first two and a half periods remains tied at two and will be decided in overtime. The Penguins are outshooting the Rangers 38-23.

0:38:
The Penguins are trying their best to end this in regulation, but their scoring chances on the power play just couldn't get past Lundqvist. The Penguins used their timeout.

1:26:
The Rangers just tied it up shorthanded. Marc Staal sneaked a shot past a screened Fleury. This is a crazy game. Penguins 2, Rangers 2

1:53:
Henrik Lundqvist threw his broken stick in frustration. That's a penalty and Avery will serve the two minutes.

1:53:
The Penguins take the lead! Matt Cooke just took a slapper from the left cirle and put it right past Lundqvist's short side. Penguins 2, Rangers 1

2:31:
As the penalty expires, Chris Kunitz shot the puck from the low slot. Malkin was driving to the net, and Kunitz found the puck somehow and put it past Lundqvist, who apparently is human. Penguins 1, Rangers 1

3:05:
Malkin dished the puck to the slot to Crosby. But Crosby's backhander was promptly saved by Lundqist's glove.

3:48:
Girardi got hit in the face with a puck and he was bleeding out on the ice.

4:15:
Kunitz almost tied this game up. Lundqvist was sprawling, and Malkin passed it across the crease, but Kunitz couldn't quite get the puck up.

4:37:
The Penguins will have another power play. After Malkin generated a couple nice scoring chances, he drew a holding call on Ryan Callahan.

7:28:
A scrum ensued after Lundqvist made a save as the power play expired. Cooke and Staal will go to the box and we will have four-on-four hockey for two minutes.

9:41: The Penguins will have another chance to tie this game up as Gaborik goes to the box for hooking.

10:59:
Lundqvist gave up a nice rebound off a Malkin slap shot, but the goaltender reacted quickly and covered it with his hand.

12:30: A scramble in the crease ended with Michalek diving and pushing the puck out of danger with his hand.

13:49: Fedotenko's shot sailed to the right of Fleury, but it took a wierd bounce off the boards and went right into the crease behind Fleury. Flower dove back and covered the puck.

14:27:
During a Rangers change, Dupuis dropped the puck back to Letang, whose slapshot from the right point was stopped and froze by Lundqvist.

16:52:
Asham took a blast from the right side. It bounced off of Lundqvist's pads, but no Penguins were there for the juicy rebound.

18:21:
Mark Letestu just had a breakaway, he tried to go backhand through Lundqvist's five hole, but Lundqvist denied him.

18:45:
The Rangers penalty kill did a great job to kill off that penalty, and we're back to full strength.

20:00:
Eric Staal will be in the box for another 1:15, and the Penguins will look to tie this game early to start the third period.

THIRD PERIOD

SECOND PERIOD NOTES
-The Penguins now lead in hits 23-21.
-Crosby is now an amazing 94 percent on faceoffs (16-1)
-Malkin leads the Penguins with four shots.

0:00:
After two straight home games where the Penguins needed to protect a lead in the third period, the team now finds itself on the other end. The Penguins are going to need a bit of a comeback in the final frame to win this game. Pittsburgh still leads in shots 24-14. And the Pens will have 1:15 left in power play time to tie the game up to start the third.

1:48:
Malkin's wicked slapshot from the top of the right circle sailed just wide of the net and smacked off the glass.

2:29:
Dubinsky got a shorthanded shot off, despite Malkin playing tight defense, but Fleury made the nice save.

2:45:
Marc Staal fell at the blue line and his stick flew up and hit Dupuis in the face. At first, a penalty was not called, but after Dupuis showed the ref blood, Staal headed to the box for four minutes.

3:05:
Sean Avery took a falling shot from the right faceoff dot, but Fleury blocked it and froze the puck.

4:07:
Letestu's pass through the crease almost found its way to Conner's stick, but he couldn't tip it onto the net.

5:44:
The attendance is announced at 18,125. That's the 175th-straight sellout for the Penguins.

6:40:
Malkin, Adams and Rupp just had about three great chances from the crease. Rupp first took the shot, and Lundqvist had trouble with the rebound. Yet neither Adams or Malkin could find the puck to put it in the net. After an icing call on New York, head coach John Tortorella called a timeout.

7:51:
Fleury just made a point-blank save on Gaborik, who ripped a shot from the bottom of the right circle.

8:34:
Comrie made a nice pass from the boards to a breaking Talbot down the center. But the puck skipped over his stick.

9:44:
The Rangers get on the board first. Former Penguin Erik Christensen found the puck after it bounced off a skate and turned around in the low slot to spin a shot past Fleury. Rangers 1, Penguins 0

10:27:
Engelland wound up a hard slapper from the left point. It bounced off of Lundqvist's pads and went right to Crosby. But Crosby couldn't bat it out of the air.

12:37:
Fleury just made a creat save on Derek Stepan, who whipped a shot through traffic from the left circle.

12:49:
Another amazing stat courtesy of Grove - Crosby is now 12-0 in the faceoff circle.

13:13:
Crosby tried a shot from behind the net, but it hit the post. We are back to full strength. The Rangers don't have a shot this entire period, and they only have one throughout the last 15-minutes. That stat was courtesy of Bob Grove.

14:27:
Goligoski just faked about three shots from the high slot. When he finally shot it through traffic, it bounced off the post and to the corner.

15:13: Geno's cross ice pass through the low slot found Crosby's stick, but Sid's shot just missed the net. The Penguins will go on the power play after Girardi pushed Cooke to the ice and was called for interference.

16:48: The Pirates' new manager, Clint Hurdle was just welcomed and introduced to a loud applause.

17:06: Chris Connor's shot went just wide of Lundqvist.

20:00: And we're underway.

SECOND PERIOD

FIRST PERIOD NOTES
- Hits are even, 14-14, between the biggest hitting teams in the NHL.
- Crosby is 8-0 in the faceoff circle. Unreal how sick he is in the dot.
- No power plays in the first period.

0:00: That's the end of the first period. Despite a barage of shots for the Pens, they couldn't squeak one by Lundqvist. It's scoreless after one. Shots favor Pittsburgh, 12-5.

1:22: Martin found Goligoski sneaking through the backdoor, but Goose's shot went over the top of the net.

3:16: Crosby blocks a shot from the high point and then gets off a good shot from the near circle. The puck sails just wide of the post.

3:29: The Penguins are using Letang and Orpik against Gaborik. So far so good for the D-pair.

4:30: Goligoski took a stick to the face and skated to the bench. Hopefully he'll be back soon.

4:56: Letestu gets a great chance with a low, hard shot from the slot. Lundqvist gets his pad on the puck to kick it away.

5:02: Talbot gets a chance streaking down the far side. Lundqvist drops to his knees to make the save.

7:05: Comrie and Callahan drop the gloves. Both players land a few blows before falling to the ice.

Crosby and Staal Winter Classic jerseys are now available at the team store, PensGear!

8:13: Great play by Asham to create a scoring chance. He took a pass behind himself, slowed up on the play and then waited for a hole. Then he whipped a backhand shot toward the goal. Lundqvist koncked it down for the save.

9:29: Kunitz has a great chance in front but just misses. He played a weird bounce of the backboards and had the puck all alone to the side of the crease. However, he couldn't get his backhander to connect as it slid just wide.

10:32: Malkin dances with the puck and snaps off a hard shot from the high slot. Lundqvist grabs the rubber with his glove to avert the score.

12:12: Crosby nearly has a breakaway as he smartly got body position on the last defender. Unfortunately the pass was a little far and Lundqvist pushed it out of danger and back to center ice.

13:21: Malkin gets off a great shot to the side of the cage. Lundqvist is there to make the save. Malkin and Del Zotto both get matching two-minute penalties after the play.

14:58: Great save by Fleury on Del Zotto. The Rangers blueliner got deep on the play and had a great shot from the side of the crease. He tried five-hole. Fleury denied that try.

20:00: Annnnnnd begin!
