Penguins Lightning In-Game Blog

0:00:
The Lightning ride a goaltending change from Mike Smith to Dan Ellis and four unanswered goals to take a 5-3 decision over the Penguins. Pittsburgh did receive two shorthanded goals on one penalty in the first period on tallies from Craig Adams and Matt Cooke. The Penguins return to action on Friday night at 7 p.m. at CONSOL Energy Center when they host the Flyers.

0:31:
St. Louis catches up to a loose puck in neutral zone, fends off Goligoski and takes the puck the length of the ice before sliding it into the open cage for his second goal of the period. Lightning 5, Penguins 3.

1:25:
Fleury is out of the net.

1:34:
The Penguins are using their timeout right here.

1:34:
Good job right there by Ellis to peak his head through traffic and catch a Goligoski shot with his catcher's mitt.

2:52:
The Penguins need to find a way to get the puck into the Tampa Bay zone and establish a forecheck.

Taylor Swift again!!!!

7:16:
What a play by Martin. He just broke up a two-on-one by blocking a Purcell shot that was set up by Lecavalier.

9:19:
A good job there by the Penguins of generating zone time and setting themselves up for chances, but they just couldn't get the puck behind Ellis.

11:26:
The Penguins will have a golden chance to avenge the St. Louis tally with Hall in the box for interference.

13:20:
What a burst of speed right there by St. Louis. He used his wheels to blow past the Penguins defense, eluded a pokecheck by Fleury and chipped a shot into the cage. Lightning 4, Penguins 3.

14:29:
Quietly, Fleury has kept the Penguins in this game over the past 20 minutes with several big saves. He was just alert enough to grab a loose puck before Hall could slide it under him.

16:31:
Despite being stuck in their own zone for most of the power play, the Penguins are able to find a way to kill off the Kunitz penalty.

18:40:
The rash of penalties resumes as Kunitz slashes Adam Hall and goes to the penalty box as a result.

18:56:
The Penguins aren't able to take advantage of the power play as both teams return to full strength.

20:00:
The Penguins are hoping to take the lead and wrap up an unbeaten road swing.

THIRD PERIOD

SECOND PERIOD NOTES:
- The Penguins are outhitting the Lightning, 14-13.
- Alex Goligoski has logged a team-high 18:55 minutes.
- The Penguins will open the third period with 1:04 remaining on a power play.

0:00:
Two periods are complete at the St. Pete Times Forum and the score is tied at 3-3. Pittsburgh continues to outshoot the Lightning, 21-19.

0:26:
Letang is back on the ice for this power play, which is great news for the Penguins.

0:56:
Good job of protecting the puck by Malkin, which leads to Purcell taking a tripping minor.

1:56:
Another huge save by Ellis on Crosby, this time from two feet away as a loose puck came to Crosby at the top of the crease following a forward faceoff win by the Penguins.

2:14:
Ellis made the first really tough save he has had to make since relieving Smith, laying on his back to deny Crosby, who was dancing around the Lightning in the zone.

4:48:
Great hustle by St. Louis at the Penguins blue line forces Goligoski to take an interference penalty, negating the final four seconds of the Pittsburgh power play.

PENALTY SHOT:
Fleury uses the bottom of his catching glove to deny Bergenheim!

6:09:
Sean Bergenheim will have a chance at a penalty shot after Malkin hooked him on a shorthanded breakaway. Fleury made a good glove save on Bergenheim's original shot.

6:44:
At least the referees are trying to even out the penalty calls. This time it's Michael Vernace off the ice for roughing.

7:08:
The Penguins are 0-for-2 on the power play as Tampa Bay kills off the Stamkos minor.

9:00:
Wow! Thompson had Fleury beat on a shorthanded breakaway, but his shot went off the goal post to the left of the Pittsburgh netminder.

9:08:
Stamkos is in the penalty box for tripping.

9:42:
The Penguins kill off the second penalty to Kunitz.

11:17:
That didn't last long. Vincent Lecavalier just converted a one-timer from the top of the far circle off a St. Louis feed across the grain on Fleury to tie the score. Penguins 3, Lightning 3.

11:31:
Kris Letang went into the Penguins locker room. We'll keep you posted.

11:42:
Tampa Bay is going to have 1:22 to work with on a two-man advantage as Kunitz got his stick up into the face of Stamkos.

A Steven Stamkos picture ... ho-hum ... one of Taylor Swift ... NOW WE ARE TALKING!!!

12:20:
Dupuis is in the sin bin for the second time tonight, this time for interference. Last time he sat in the box the Penguins scored twice.

12:57:
As promised, Bylsma is sprinkling Asham in the lineup at different spots. He just took his third shift alongside Crosby.

13:59:
The shorthanded goals by Adams and Cooke give the Penguins three on the season, tying them with the Calgary Flames for most in the NHL.

16:44:
Adams is feeling it tonight. He nearly scored his second goal of the game as Ellis had to make a blocker save on his wrist shot from the near circle.

18:52:
Tampa Bay will go on the man-advantage for the third time as Mike Comrie was caught tripping.

20:00:
I hope we can match the action of the first period!

SECOND PERIOD

FIRST PERIOD NOTES:
- Pittsburgh had the edge on faceoffs, 9-7.
- Kris Letang led the Penguins with three shots on goal.
- Craig Adams and Brooks Orpik each posted a plus-3 rating.

0:00:
An action-filled first period comes to a close with the Penguins leading the Lightning by a 3-2 count. Shots on goal were 12-8 in favor of the Penguins.

0:42:
Does this crazy first period make up for the lack of scoring on Saturday?!?!

3:20:
The Lightning draw within one as Teddy Purcell blasts a long-range slap shot behind Fleury. Penguins 3, Lightning 2.

6:55:
Sean Bergenheim just knocked Orpik into Fleury, and of course the Penguins took plenty of exception to that and get a power play as a result. Bergenheim received the extra two minutes while Ben Lovejoy and Steve Downie received two minutes for roughing and 10-minute misconducts.

7:45:
That will be all she wrote for Mike Smith. Dan Ellis is now in goal after Adams came out of the penalty box and fed a pass to Dupuis at the bottom of the near circle. Dupuis made a move to the backhand and slid a shot under Smith for his second goal of the season. Penguins 3, Lightning 1.

9:56:
Adams won't get a chance to add to his shorthanded point total because he is in the box this time for tripping.

12:27:
Close call there as Martin St. Louis just sweeped a shot off the post as he dived to the ice as he stared at an open cage.

15:31:
Wow two shorthanded goals in one penalty!! Adams led an odd-man rush into the Tampa Bay zone, where he fed to a cutting Kris Letang. Smith stopped Letang's shot, but Cooke scored on the rebound for his second shorthanded goal of the season. Penguins 2, Lightning 1.

16:32:
Craig Adams can score in the regular season!!! The veteran just converted a two-on-one pass from Matt Cooke in the far circle by blowing a shot through Smith for his first reguar-season goal since Dec. 16, 2008 at Edmonton. Penguins 1, Lightning 1.

16:42:
Pascal Dupuis picked up a holding call in the neutral zone putting the Lightning on the man-advantage.

17:09:
Dana Tyrell just picked up his first NHL goal for the Lightning. The Penguins had a miscommunication behind the net, allowing Nate Thompson to step in and take the loose puck. He fed a pass to an open Tyrell on the doorstep for the easy tally. Lightning 1, Penguins 0.

19:32:
Asham opened the game on a line with Rupp and Sidney Crosby. Asham nearly scored on the rebound of a Paul Martin shot from the left point.

20:00:
Marc-Andre Fleury gets the call in goal for the Penguins opposite the undefeated Mike Smith.

FIRST PERIOD

7:34 PM:
The Penguins add another injured player back into the lineup tonight as forward Arron Asham makes his Pittsburgh debut against the Lightning. Head coach Dan Bylsma said that Asham will open the contest on the fourth line with Mike Rupp and Craig Adams.

7:32 PM:
Don't forget to cast your vote for the 'Pittsburgh Penguins Greatest Games, Vol. 2' DVD. The five-disc collector's edition set is expected to hit shelves early in 2011. 7:30 PM:
The Penguins conclude their three-game road trip by taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning at the St. Pete Times Forum. Pittsburgh has played very well here in recent years, winning on five of its past six trips here. A victory by the Penguins tonight would allow them to tie the second-best road start in team history at 4-0-1 (7-0, 2009-10; 4-0-1, 1994-95).
