Penguins\' \'Beard-A-Thon\' Raises Over $88,000 For Mario Lemieux Foundation
Pittsburgh Penguins fans raised more than $88,000 for the Mario Lemieux Foundation in the team’s second annual playoff “Beard-A-Thon” – leading the NHL in Beard-A-Thon charity fundraising through the second round of the playoffs.  More than 1,400 Penguins fans grew beards.

“Our fans have proven time after time they are the best in the NHL,” said Penguins president David Morehouse.  “By supporting this unique fundraiser, our fans have once again demonstrated their dedication and passion for Penguins hockey – and a worthy cause.”

Tom Grealish, President of the Mario Lemieux Foundation added, “Proceeds from the Beard-A-Thon will allow the Lemieux Foundation to continue our important cancer and neonatal research initiatives as well as support Austin’s Playroom Project.”

The Beard-A-Thon encouraged fans to “grow one for the team” for the duration of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and have their friends, family, and business associates pledge them.  Fans who were unable or unwilling to grow a playoff beard could also pledge their favorite NHL player or build a virtual playoff beard on the website.

Twelve of the sixteen teams competing in the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs participated in this year’s Beard-A-Thon campaign and raised over $280,000 to date for local team charities.
