Mt. Lebanon needed a 1-0 play-in game victory over Pine-Richland to qualify for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League playoffs, but they appear intent on making the most of their stay after upsetting fifth-seeded Plum, 3-2, in overtime on Thursday.
Jason Hartman was the hero for the Blue Devils when he tallied 3:23 into the first overtime to send Mt. Lebanon advancing to the quarterfinal round. They will take on No. 1 seed Shaler at 7 p.m. on March 16 at Blade Runners-Harmarville.
Hartman's heroics were necessary after his teammate, Will Hoeft, sent the game to overtime when he tallied six minutes into the third period.
Plum took a 2-1 lead into the third period behind goals from Cody Cenci in the opening period and Cody Brenner in the second. In between those goals Trevor Nelson tallied for Mt. Lebanon.
Travis Lisowski stopped 29 of 31 shots in goal for the Blue Devils.
Class AAA: Canon McMillan 3, North Allegheny 1
Joe Mottiqua notched a goal and an assist and Mitchell Shaner picked up two helpers to lead Canon McMillan to a 3-1 opening-round victory over North Allegheny at Southpointe on Thursday night.
Eighth-seeded Canon McMillan advances to take on No. 3 seed State College on March 17 at Penn State Ice Arena. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
