Road to the Penguins Cup: Class AA Preview
Is this the year somebody knocks off Greater Latrobe? That’s the biggest question in Class AA as the road to the 2010 Penguins Cup championship heats up over the next three weeks.

Greater Latrobe once again enters the tournament as the top seed in AA following a 17-3-1 regular-season finish. The Wildcats, who went a perfect 26-0 last season, will be looking to wrap up their third consecutive Penguins Cup title. They have also been crowned state champions the past two seasons, making them one of only five teams in western Pennsylvania history to accomplish that.

If Greater Latrobe is to defend their title they will have to fend off some tough competition which includes fellow top seeds Bishop Canevin, West Allegheny and Peters Township, each of whom finished just two points behind Greater Latrobe’s 35.

Because Class AA sends only eight teams to the postseason, they will not drop the puck until March 15 when West Allegheny hosts Montour in a 7 p.m. matchup at Airport Ice Arena. Other quarterfinal games include: Bishop Canevin-Chartiers Valley on March 16 at 7 p.m. at Mt. Lebanon; Peters-Township-Meadville at 6:50 p.m. on March 17 at Southpointe; and Greater-Latrobe-Moon on March 18 at 7:15 p.m. at Kirk Nevin.

Once the Penguins Cup reaches the semifinals, the action will head to Mellon Arena. Those games are slated for March 22 and 23, with the AA game slotted at 7 p.m. both days.

The 2010 Class AAA Penguins Cup champion will be determined following the Penguins-Flyers afternoon matinee on March 27. Game time for the contest is 7 p.m.

On April 1 the winner of the Penguins Cup will take on the Flyers Cup champion at Mellon Arena for the right to be crowned the Pennsylvania State High School Hockey champion. That contest will begin at 1:30 p.m.
