PENGUINS WIN!!!!!
Marc-Andre Fleury stops Pavel Datsyuk and Jason Williams while Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each score on the backhand to give the Penguins a 2-0 victory in the shootout, and a 2-1 victory in the game. The Penguins improve to 34-21-1 on the season and they are a perfect 7-0 in shootouts. The Penguins return to action on Monday at 7 p.m. when they host the Buffalo Sabres at Mellon Arena.

SHOOTOUT

The Penguins twice ice the puck over the last 1:21 of the period to kill off the power play and force a shootout. Fans chant "Fleury, Fleury, Fleury."

1:21:
Gonchar is penalized for hooking on the play.

1:31:
Filppula gets behind Gonchar put Fleury pokes the puck off his blade.

1:40:
Crosby takes the puck the length of the ice right to the Detroit net but the Wings are able to recover just in time to make sure he didn't get a good shot off.

3:54:
Howard stands his ground to make a big save with his chest protector on Malkin in the slot.

5:00:
It's fitting these two evenly matched teams are heading to overtime to settle this contest.

OVERTIME

0:00:
Howard uses his right pad to stop a blast from Orpik and the game heads to overtime tied, 1-1.

0:13:
Guerin's shot goes off the outside of the near post.

0:40:
Howard gloves a shot off the blade of Staal coming down the left side.

1:51:
The Penguins have a faceoff in the Detroit zone thanks to an icing call.

Cooke is tripped behind the net but no penalty is called yet again as the fans begin giving it to the officials.

Fedotenko just danced around two wings but his shot from the left circle was held onto by Howard.

7:16:
This time it's the Penguins just missing an open cage as Staal sends a puck through the crease from the right of the cage. The action and the intensity of the crowd is really picking up.

8:50:
Another Penguins-Red Wings game will come down to the buzzer. Brad Stuart just fired a slap shot from the right point which was deflected by Daniel Cleary standing just outside the crease over the shoulder of Fleury to knot the score. Penguins 1, Red Wings 1.

Howard kicks aside a long-range shot from Letestu which was deflected by Kennedy on the way through.

Cooke's back and the Penguins have an abreviated power play.

The remaining 51 seconds of the Detroit power play are negated by a high-sticking call to Drew Miller.

Filppula stared at a wide-open net but shot the puck through the blue paint wide from the left of the crease.

Fans are not happy with the referees (when are they ever, actually) as Cooke is given a penalty for goaltender interference.

Not to be outdone, Howard denies a tic-tac-toe play from Malkin to a streaking Staal just outside the crease.

Fleury makes one of his best saves of the game by stoning Henrik Zetterberg's drive from the slot.

The Penguins look to finish off their 16th home victory of the season.

THIRD PERIOD

 

SECOND PERIOD NOTES:
- Kris Letang and Sidney Crosby each have five shots.
- Jordan Staal has four hits through two periods.
- The Penguins have outhit the Wings, 15-12.

We have pushing and shoving following the final buzzer as Brooks Orpik and Patrick Eaves mix it up. The Penguins will take a 1-0 lead into the final frame. They are outshooting the Wings, 29-11.

Howard comes back with a nifty save on Letang's drive from the right point, which might have hit traffic on the way through.

3:14:
Alex Goligoski and Sidney Crosby just teamed up for a spectacular goal. Goligoski skated the puck over the blue line and dished to Crosby skating down the left side. Crosby took the puck right to the cage and deposited a backhander under Howard to open the scoring. Malkin picked up the second assist. Penguins 1, Red Wings 0.

The Penguins hold Detroit shotless as they kill off the Eaton penalty.

Detroit goes on their second power play as Eaton is sent off for holding.

Howard is the only reason it's not about 4-0 Pittsburgh. He just kept his paddle along the ice to stop a Crosby backhander and the rebound by Fedotenko.

Malkin danced around the Detroit zone and fed Dupuis for a backhander from eight feet away but Howard closed his pads to make the save.

Crosby just set Eaton up in the near circle but his shot went over the cage.

The action has resumed at Mellon Arena.

SECOND PERIOD

FIRST PERIOD NOTES:
- Sidney Crosby went 6-2 on faceoffs.
- Jordan Staal led the Penguins with two hits.
- Kris Letang had four shots in the opening frame.

What an exciting opening period at Mellon Arena. Neither team finds the back of the cage as the Penguins control the play by outshooting the Wings, 16-6.

Gonchar steps onto the ice as the crowd appreciates a good penalty-killing effort.

The Red Wings get to ice their power-play unit for the first time as Sergei Gonchar goes to the box for tripping.

5:45:
Detroit kills off the Filppula penalty and the Penguins are 0-for-2 on the power play.

7:45:
Valtteri Filppula gives the Penguins their second crack with the man-advantage by taking a hooking penalty.

8:00:
Howard holds his ground in the crease as Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko bang away at the puck. Shots are now 11-3 in favor of the Penguins.

STAT OF THE NIGHT:
Evgeni Malkin has picked up six goals and 11 points over his past six games.

Maxime Talbot, the hero of that Game 7 victory, will not be in the lineup this afternoon. Other scratches include Eric Godard and Martin Skoula. Tyler Kennedy and Alex Goligoski both return to the lineup. Ville Leino and Derek Meech are out for Detroit.

12:30 PM:
The Stanley Cup Final rematch everyone has been waiting for finally takes place as the Penguins host the Detroit Red Wings for the first time since capturing the Stanley Cup in Joe Louis Arena on June 12.
