Penguins Report: Outdoor Soccer

Friday, 11.06.2009 / 3:41 PM / Penguins Report
By Sam Kasan
_____________________________________________________________________________

The Penguins took advantage of their day in the sun by holding their traditional pre-practice/game soccer contest in the parking lot of the Ice Centre of San Jose. The players slowly trickled out and nearly the whole team took part in the game with the sunny sky and mountains providing the backdrop. See 12:24 PM entry for details.

6:57 PM (PACIFIC TIME):
Sounds heard around the locker room:

Dan Bylsma

On Conner and Bourque
Chris Conner had a really good game and created a bunch of scoring chances (against Los Angeles). He was a factor with his speed. Bourque is on the second power-play unit. He didn't get a ton of time out there but he's added some jump and some speed to our lineup. In the absence of soem key players, they're both going to get opportunities to continue to add their speed in the offensive end and that's something we need from everybody in our lineup.
On using Staal against opponents' top line
We are comfortable with Sid's line going head-to-head with most lines. A lot of it has to do with who's doing well on draws as well. If it's a defensive zone draw and Sid is doing well, then we'll take his line to go out there and win that draw. We're getting people we want out in that situation.

Bill Guerin
On his time playing with San Jose
I wasn’t here a long time but I really liked it out here. This is a great place to play hockey. It’s a great place to live. I really did enjoy myself and think of good times. I had a lot of good teammates, made a lot of nice friends and it was awesome.
On Sharks fans
They’re full every night. People are really passionate about it. They love the Sharks and you get your space away from the rink. It really is a great place to play. I really loved it here. The weather is always nice. It’s dynamite.
On East vs. West
I’m East Coast born and raised. I’ve played with four teams in the East and four teams in the West, and Dallas a bit. Warm weather is nice.

Marc-Andre Fleury
On San Jose's offense
They have a couple good skilled players that can score goals. You have to try to be disciplined so they don’t get too many power plays.
On Joe Thornton
He’s such a good playmaker first. He sees everybody on the ice. He’s able to get the pass through to pretty much anywhere. He can shoot too so you have to be aware of him.
On an up-and-down battle with San Jose
It’s exciting and easier to stay in the game. It’s more fun to play when something’s happening on both sides instead of trapping and waiting.

4:29 PM (PACIFIC TIME):
Three players were absent from Pittsburgh's practice on Friday. They were Evgeni Malkin, Tyler Kennedy and Alex Goligoski. Head coach Dan Bylsma was asked about the latter two's status at his media session.

"(Goligoski is) just warn down," Bylsma said. "A little bit tired and hoping a day off will get him healthy."

On Kennedy, Bylsma added: "He wasn’t fine in the pre-game skate (in Los Angeles). Tyler goes only one speed. That can be his problem sometimes and he’s going 100 percent all the time. Again, it’s just a situation where do we keep going with a nagging injury or rest it and try to get completely healthy."

12:50 PM (PACIFIC TIME):
The Penguins took the ice for practice. Maxime Talbot and Eric Godard were the first on the ice, even before the many pucks were brought out. The two players make mock passes and after Talbot scored a ghost goal, he threw his arms into the air in celebration.

12:24 PM (PACIFIC TIME):
The Penguins took advantage of their day in the sun by holding their traditional pre-practice/game soccer contest in the parking lot of the Ice Centre of San Jose. The players slowly trickled out and nearly the whole team took part in the game with the sunny sky and mountains providing the backdrop.

After a spirited contest, the game came down to Matt Cooke and Pascal Dupuis. Dupuis triumph (despite Cooke's protests) on a controversial call. But Dupuis scooped up the ball and took a victory lap to the locker room to get ready for practice.

12:02 PM (PACIFIC TIME):
The Pittsburgh Penguins spent the evening in Los Angeles following their game against the Kings on Thursday night. On Friday morning, the club hopped a bus, boarded a flight and took off for San Jose. After getting off the plane, the Penguins skipped the hotel and went straight to the rink for their Friday afternoon practice.
