Here are some quick notes from Monday's practice at Mellon Arena.
Penguins forward Ruslan Fedotenko was given the day off to rest but will return to practice on Tuesday, according to head coach Dan Bylsma.
Fedotenko was on the wrong side of a collision with Islanders defenseman Brenden Witt on Saturday. Fedotenko left the game but was able to return and score the game-tying goal to force overtime in Pittsburgh's eventual 4-3 shootout victory.
"It’s related to the bumps and bruises of the game," Bylsma said. "But again, it’s a maintenance day and plan to see him on the ice tomorrow."
Following Witt's hit on Fedotenko, new Penguins blueliner Jay McKee rushed to his teammates aid. McKee exchanged blows with Witt and received 17 minutes in penalties. The official game sheet marked McKee with a game misconduct, but that was in error as McKee returned to the ice after his penatly time expired.
"We all thought, and he thought, he was coming back and that was just a statistician’s mistake," Bylsma said.
The Penguins practiced at Mellon Arena in their blue uniforms. Though the team won't break out their alternate blue jerseys until later in the month, the players wore the gear to start breaking them in.
Pittsburgh will practice Tuesday at Mellon Arena and will host the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday before embarking on a four-game road trip. With the Coyotes coming to town first, the coaching staff are making their preparations.
"As of right now the video is playing in our coaches’ room about Phoenix, and their team and what their tendencies are," Bylsma said. "So we’ll certainly address that today. (You will) probably see some of the stuff that we hope to do in the game tomorrow in practice, and then we’ll be more in tune come game."
