Penguins captain Sidney Crosby left the team's Thursday night pre-season game against Columbus with a tight groin. He skated on three shifts and did not return as a precautionary measure.

"It was just sore," Crosby said. "It bothered me in warm ups and bothered me the last couple of days. It got worse. It's better to stay off of it."

Crosby believes that the injury isn't serious.

"I'm hoping it's just a few days," Crosby said. "I've hurt my groin before and it's not too bad. I missed five games last year with it and it's not too bad at all. It's just something that you have to be careful with."

Crosby will not practice on Friday with the team but will try to skate on Saturday. His status for Sunday's pre-season finale in Detroit is unknown.

"I'd love to play Sunday and that's what I hope," he said. "You really don't know with groins. You just look at it each day and see how it goes."

"We'll see (how it goes) as days go on," head coach Dan Bylsma said. "We know the next game is an exhibition game. The one on October 2nd is the first regular-season game. We'll judge where he's at and go day by day."
