Strait Competing At US Junior Camp

Penguins prospect Brian Strait is among 45 top players under the age of 20 competing at the USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, NY.

The players are auditioning for a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team that will take part in the 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, Dec. 26, 2007-Jan. 5, 2008, in Pardubice and Liberec, Czech Republic.

Strait, a 19-year-old defenseman for Boston University, was Pittsburgh’s third-round choice (65th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Before joining BU, Strait served as captain for the U.S. National Under-18 Team. He is hoping to be among those selected to represent Team USA once again.

The camp features practices and eight international scrimmages. The 45 American players will be split into two teams, Team White and Team Blue, and will compete against Under-20 teams from Sweden and Finland.

The camp will feature the top two picks in this year’s NHL Entry Draft, Patrick Kane and James vanRiemsdyk. Also highlighting the camp are six members of the U.S. National Junior Team that captured the bronze medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship, including Mike Carman, Blake Geoffrion, Kane, Jamie McBain, Kyle Okposo and vanRiemsdyk.

The camp also includes 13 players from the U.S. National Under-18 team that earned the silver medal at the 2007 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.

The camp concludes Saturday.
