Penguins Set To Open Rookie Conditioning Camp
Pittsburgh Penguins training camp is almost three months away.

But, the organization’s up-and-coming players are getting a jump start this week as 32 Penguins prospects will take part in a summer conditioning camp in Pittsburgh.

The camp, which runs from Tuesday until Monday, July 2, features a variety of activities for the prospects, including medical/fitness testing, power skating sessions, a sports psychology seminar and a nutrition seminar, as well off-ice training at Mellon Arena and on-ice sessions at Southpointe.

Three on-ice sessions are open to the public: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 3 p.m. at Southpointe.

In addition, select prospects are scheduled to assist at the Penguins’ Youth Scrimmage Camp on Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.

“I think it is a great thing. We’ll have a lot of the kids we drafted going. It’s all part of the development – getting these kids integrated into what it’s like to be a professional athlete and a player and see what Pittsburgh is all about and to experience some competition,” Penguins General Manager Ray Shero said. “I think it’s going to be really good for us.”

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Jonathan Filewich, Tyler Kennedy and Ryan Stone; top prospects Kris Letang and goaltender David Brown as well as seven of this year’s NHL Entry Draft choices are among those who will take part in the camp.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Todd Richards and assistant coach Dan Bylsma will run the camp in Pittsburgh.

“When I was in Nashville with Todd, he helped run the conditioning camp and was very involved and very detail-oriented,” Shero said. “I think he and Dan are going to do a great job and they are excited about it.”
