Boys and Girls Clubs to get donations, thanks to Crosby, Cold-fX
Two chapters of the Boys and Girls Clubs – one in Western Pennsylvania, one in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia – will receive donations of $2,500, thanks to Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby and COLD-fX.

Crosby was named the winner of the Mark Messier Leadership Award in January, and COLD-fX is making a $5,000 donation to a charity designated by each monthly winner.

Crosby, a native of Cole Harbour, chose to split his donation between the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania and the Boys and Girls Club of Cole Harbour -- $2,500 to each.

COLD-fX is the official immune enhancer of the NHL.

“I’ve always been impressed with the work being done by the Boys and Girls Clubs, both here in the Pittsburgh area and back where I grew up in Cole Harbour, so it is a great honor to be able to assist them with this donation from COLD-fX,” Crosby said. “I want to thank Mark Messier and COLD-fX for making such an important contribution to our communities.”

Messier, a six-time Stanley Cup champion and a two-time NHL MVP, instituted the award this season to honor top NHL athletes who show an ability to motivate and influence teammates, a commitment to community and charitable causes, a dedication to a professional attitude and a desire to serve as a positive role model in society.

“My goal with this award is to motivate more athletes to play a leadership role on their teams and in their communities and to recognize those that do,” Messier said.

Other monthly winners were Brendan Shanahan of the New York Rangers (November), Scott Niedermayer of the Anaheim Ducks (December), Vincent Lecavalier of the Tampa Bay Lightning (February) and Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks (March). All the recipients were personally selected by Messier.

Speaking of Crosby, Messier said, “Great players make their teammates better, and Sidney has done exactly that. Combine that with brilliant performance and his active role in the community and the way he lends himself to different charities in the Pittsburgh area, and you have one pretty special nineteen-year-old. Looking toward the future, I don’t think the National Hockey League or the Pittsburgh Penguins could ask for a better marquee player.”
