MALKIN SCORES TWICE, ADDS ASSIST IN RUSSIA\'S QUARTERFINAL WIN

Evgeni Malkin Pittsburgh Penguins
Evgeni Malkin tallied three points Wednesday to lift Russia past the Czech Republic, 4-0, at the IIHF World Championship in Moscow.

Malkin had two goals and added an assist for the Russians in the quarterfinal triumph. Russia advances to Saturday’s semifinals against either Finland or Team USA.

Malkin now has eight points (4+4) in seven games for the unbeaten Russians (7-0).

"I thought he played great," said Sergei Gonchar about Malkin to IIHF.com. "Besides scoring those goals, he played well defensively, and he was skating very well."

Alexander Ovechkin described Malkin as "our leader" to IIHF.com

Gonchar played but did not record a point for Russia. He has four points (1+3) in the tournament.

"It was a big day for our country, and we're happy to get a win here tonight," Gonchar told IIHF.com. "It was good playing in front of our fans. Seven years ago [in St. Petersburg 2000], we didn't play as well. Now everyone's playing well defensively. Even the forwards who are scoring our goals are playing good defense."

In Thursday’s quarterfinal battles, Canada battles Switzerland, while Team USA meets Finland.
