CROSBY\'S GOAL GIVES PENGUINS OVERTIME SHOOTOUT WIN OVER RANGERS
NEW YORK – Sidney Crosby’s overtime shootout goal gave the Penguins a 4-3 win over the Rangers on Thursday night.

Crosby snuck the puck between the leg pads of Henrik Lundqvist for the only goal of the shootout. Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside Michael Nylander, Jaromir Jagr and Petr Prucha. Erik Christensen hit the post, while Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped Evgeni Malkin.

In regulation, Jagr scored with 2:24 left in the second period. His initial shot was stopped by Fleury. However, the puck bounced off Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi’s skate and went into the net for a 1-0 Rangers lead.

Nylander’s wrister beat Fleury 1:09 later for a 2-0 New York lead.

Jordan Staal tallied his sixth short-handed goal of the year 1:16 into the third period. Staal split a pair of Rangers defenders and lifted the puck into the net past Lundqvist. It gives Staal a share of the NHL record for rookie short-handed goals.

Staal is the third rookie in NHL history to score six short-handed goals in one season. The others to do that were Gerry Minor (1980-81 Canucks) and John Madden (1999-2000 Devils). Ryan Malone and Ryan Whitney assisted on the play.

Colby Armstrong tallied a short-handed goal with 16:15 left in the period to knot the game at 2-all. After Lundqvist went to play the puck near the corner, but retreated to the net before he got to it, Armstrong fired a shot that deflected off the Rangers goalie and into the net.

Blair Betts put the Rangers back up, 3-2, with 15:17 on the clock. From a scrum in front of the net, he whacked the puck into the net for a power-play goal.

Sergei Gonchar rifled a wrister past Lundqvist for a power-play goal with 6:00 remaining. In the near corner, Max Talbot fired a crisp pass to Gonchar in the slot and he beat Lundqvist’s blocker for the goal. Armstrong added the other assist.
