STAAL'S HAT-TRICK FUELS PENGUINS PAST LEAFS IN OVERTIME
Staal got the Penguins on the scoreboard with 37.2 seconds left. He took a feed from Michel Ouellet and wristed a shot past Andrew Raycroft. Evgeni Malkin added an assist.
Staal found the back of the net again 3:32 into the second period. He took a pass from Malkin in the near slot and wristed a shot off the crossbar and into the net. Alain Nasreddine added an assist.
Malkin scored a power-play goal with 11:16 left in the period. He took a backhanded pass from Sidney Crosby at the blue line and fired a shot past Raycroft. Sergei Gonchar added an assist.
Nik Antropov tallied a goal at the end of a power play for Toronto to trim the deficit to 3-1 with 6:35 left on the clock.
Mats Sundin poked in a loose puck with 3:16 left on the clock to trim the Maple Leafs’ deficit to 3-2.
Bates Battaglia chipped a puck past Fleury to knot the game at 3-all with 54.4 seconds remaining in the second period.
Bryan McCabe fired a slap-shot past Fleury 1:05 into the game to give the Maple Leafs a 4-3 lead.
Ryan Malone banged in his own rebound 54 seconds later. Mark Recchi fired a shot on net and Malone deflected it at Raycroft. The puck squirted back to him and he slid it into the net. Gonchar added the assist.
Devereaux slammed in a rebound with 8:16 to play for a 5-4 Toronto lead.
Max Talbot found the back of the net with 6:11 remaining. On a two-on-one, Talbot kept the puck and wristed it past Raycroft. Whitney had the assist.
Staal tallied his first-career hat-trick with 1:06 left in overtime to give the Penguins the 6-5 victory. He took a pass from Malkin, faked a shot, skated around a defender and wristed the puck into the net on the short side.
