BRUINS UPEND PENGUINS, 5-4, IN OVERTIME SHOOTOUT

BOSTON – Phil Kessel’s goal gave the Bruins a wild 5-4 win over the Penguins in an overtime shootout Thursday night.

Erik Christensen scored in the shootout for the Penguins, while Marco Sturm converted for Boston. The shootout went to the fourth round before Kessel buried a puck for the victory.

The Penguins and Bruins battled to a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation.

Ryan Malone scored with 9:20 left in the first period. Sidney Crosby fired a cross-ice pass to Malone along the near side and he one-timed it into the cage for a 1-0 Penguins advantage. Mark Recchi had the other assist for Pittsburgh.

Evgeni Malkin gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead with 1:37 left in the first period. Streaking down the near side, Malkin fought off a defender and wristed a shot past Hannu Toivonen’s left shoulder and into the top corner of the net. Jordan Staal and Rob Scuderi earned assists on the play.

Glen Murray roofed a backhander to beat Marc-Andre Fleury 1:10 into the second period to trim Boston’s deficit to 2-1.

Marco Sturm tied the game at 2-all with 10:56 left in the second period when he poked in a power-play goal.

The Bruins gained the lead 37 seconds later when Brad Stuart ripped a one-timer past Fleury.

Malkin tied the game at 3-all with 5:21 to go on a great individual effort. He split through the Bruins’ defense, kicked the puck to his stick and rifled it past Toivonen’s glove for a power-play goal. Ryan Whitney earned the only assist.

Staal banged in his own rebound with 1:48 left in the second period. He broke through the defense and his initial shot hit the far post, but he alertly slid the puck under Toivonen’s right leg pad for a 4-3 Penguins lead. Michel Ouellet and Erik Christensen earned the assists.

Marc Savard banged in a rebound to knot the game at 4-all with 6:22 left in the third period.

Fleury made a bounty of acrobatic saves late in the game and in overtime to give the Penguins a chance to win the game. He stopped 40 of 44 shots in net.
