CROSBY TO START FOR EASTERN CONFERENCE ALL-STAR TEAM

Sidney Crosby is an all-star – officially.

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ 19-year-old center led all vote-getters (825,783) in NHL All-Star Game fan balloting. He will start in the Jan. 24 game in Dallas.

At 19 years, five months, Crosby is the youngest player voted to start the All-Star Game since fan balloting began in 1986. The youngest starter previously was the Penguins’ Jaromir Jagr, elected to the Prince of Wales Conference lineup for the 1992 All-Star Game in Philadelphia (19 years, 11 months).

Crosby leads the NHL in points with 65 (21+44) in 38 games. He will be joined in the Eastern Conference starting lineup by Buffalo’s Daniel Briere and Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin. On defense, Buffalo’s Brian Campbell and Montreal’s Sheldon Souray will start as will Buffalo’s Ryan Miller in goal.

For the Western Conference, Colorado’s Joe Sakic joins San Jose’s Jonathan Cheechoo and Joe Thornton up front with Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom and Anaheim’s Scott Niedermayer on defense with Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo in goal.

The rest of the Eastern and Western Conference all-star rosters will be announced Saturday.
