PENGUINS AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS TO THREE CITY OF PITTSBURGH HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have awarded three city of Pittsburgh high school students with higher education scholarships as part of the club’s continuing commitment to community service.  Each scholarship is valued at $1,000.

Recipients of the 2006 Pittsburgh Penguins Continuing Education Scholarships are Donald Swarmer of Oliver High School, Jessica Lascola of Langley High School and Steven Rickman of Perry Traditional Academy.

The Penguins have awarded 46 scholarships to inner-city students since the inception of the program in 1993.

Swarmer is an active member of the ROTC and participated in the Student Conservation Association, volunteered at his local food bank, the Children’s Festival and with the Veteran’s Hospital in Oakland.  He was also a 3-year member of Oliver’s baseball team.

Swarmer is a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh and is planning a career in post-secondary education.

Lascola was a member of Langley’s Executive Councils, the Student Council, served as treasurer for the National Honor Society and editor of the yearbook staff.   Her community efforts include volunteering at a local elementary school and with her local food drives.

She attends Slippery Rock University where she plans a career in the tourism industry.

Rickman was a member of Perry’s Student Council, SADD, the marching band and chorus.  He also served as manager for the girls/boys track teams.  He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church Youth Choir & Echoes of Praise Choir.  He also tutored students at the Arthur J. Rooney Middle School.

He has a double major at Penn State University in secondary history education and business management.
