LETANG SETS UP BOTH TEAM CANADA GOALS IN OPENING WIN
Kris Letang had two assists Tuesday to lead Canada to a 2-0 win over host Sweden to open the World Junior Championship tournament.
Letang, the Penguins’ 2005 third-round pick, assisted on both of Canada’s power-play goals in the second period. Letang, the team’s captain, is one of the returning players from Team Canada’s gold-medal squad at last year’s World Junior Championships in Vancouver. He had three points (1+2) in six games.
Letang had two goals in seven games with the Penguins this year before the 19-year-old was returned to his junior team in Val d’Or. He has 25 points (9+16) in 16 games for the Foreurs so far this season.
Canada takes on Team USA on Wednesday.
Belarus 4, Finland 3
Belarus scored three times in the third period to post the upset win.
Penguins prospects Tommi Leinonen, a 2005 fourth-round pick, and Timo Seppanen, a 2006 seventh-round choice, did not record a point for Finland in the loss.
