THRASHERS POST 4-3 OVERTIME SHOOTOUT WIN OVER PENGUINS

ATLANTA – Atlanta salvaged a 4-3 overtime shootout win Thursday night against the Penguins.

The Thrashers had a 3-1 lead at one point, but the Penguins rallied to send the game into overtime on Sidney Crosby’s goal with 15.3 seconds on the clock.

Slava Kozlov and Marian Hossa both scored in the shootout for Atlanta, while Kari Lehtonen turned aside Erik Christensen and Crosby to earn the victory.

Crosby extended his points streak to 10 games with a goal and an assist against the Thrashers. He now has 23 points (7+16) in the 10-contest scoring spree. The feat matches a career high for Crosby, who had points in 10-straight games last year. He has assists in seven-straight contests.

Niko Kapanen knocked in a rebound 1:36 into the contest to give the Thrashers a 1-0 advantage.

Ilya Kovalchuk wristed a shot past Jocelyn Thibault on the power play 6:32 into the second period for a 2-0 Atlanta advantage.

Jordan Staal scored a short-handed goal with 3:24 left on the clock. Staal intercepted Braydon Coburn pass and roofed a wrist shot past Kari Lehtonen. It was Staal’s NHL-best fifth short-handed goal of the year.

The Thrashers retaliated with 1:57 remaining. Kozlov ripped a slap-shot past Thibault for a 3-1 lead.

Ryan Malone chipped a rebound off Lehtonen and into the net 4:08 into the third period to slice the Penguins’ deficit to 3-2. Crosby and Brooks Orpik earned assists.

With 15.3 seconds left in regulation, Crosby banged in a rebound. Christensen’s shot hit the far post and dropped the ice. Crosby tapped it into the goal to send the game to overtime. Mark Recchi added an assist.
