CROSBY CONTINUES MASTERY OVER FLYERS WITH SIX POINTS

Six works well for Sid.

Sidney Crosby’s career-best, six-point explosion Wednesday night highlighted the Penguins’ 8-4 triumph over the rival Flyers.

“It was one of those nights where everything seemed to go in,” he said.

He knew the night had the potential to be good when a pass turned into a goal 5:06 into the game. Circling out from behind the net on the far side, Crosby attempted a cross-ice pass to Mark Recchi. However, the puck deflected off Derian Hatcher’s skate and glided into the goal.

“It was a good sign early to get that goal off the skates. I just tried to roll from there,” Crosby said. “Sometimes, you make passes and it seems like everyone finishes the play and the puck is in the net. I’ll take these nights when they come and the guys did a great job putting it in.”

Crosby added assists on both of Sergei Gonchar’s goals and handed out helpers to Ryan Malone, Mark Recchi and Michel Ouellet on the evening. He tallied five points in the game’s first 29:29.

“Once I got to five [points], the guys were saying, ‘Keep going. It’s only halfway through [the game],’ So I just tried to keep going. It’s hard not to want to move the puck a little more when it seems like everyone’s burying it – you want to get them the puck and keep it rolling. It was just one of those nights.

Only 19, Crosby fell two points shy of Mario Lemieux’s franchise record of eight in one game, which No. 66 accomplished twice during his Hall of Fame career. In addition, the outburst put Crosby atop the NHL scoring leaders with 47 points (15+32) in 27 games. Jaromir Jagr ranks second with 44 points (14+30) in 31 games. Crosby has scored in five-straight games and racked up 15 points (5+10) in his last six contests.

“It’s nice [to take over the scoring lead]. It’s not something I think about, to be honest,” Crosby said. “There’s a lot of season left, but it’s nice.”

And, he increased his punishment of the Flyers to 29 points (14+15) in 13 career games against Philadelphia, including 15 (7+8) in five games this season.

“It’s been a rivalry before I got here, but it’s continued since,” Crosby said. “You expect it to be an emotional intense game. I don’t do anything specific; I just prepare the same way.”
