PENGUINS STORM BACK TO POST 5-4 SHOOTOUT WIN IN WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON – The Pittsburgh Penguins rallied for a wild 5-4 overtime shootout win Monday night at Washington.

The Penguins overcame a four-goal deficit to tie the game, 4-4, at the end of regulation. Both teams failed to score in overtime.

Erik Christensen and Evgeni Malkin beat Olaf Kolzig in the shootout, while Marc-Andre Fleury stopped Mike Green and Chris Clark to earn his first-career shootout victory.

Kris Beech got the Capitals on the goal 5:10 into the contest when he tallied a power-play goal.

Chris Clark gave Washington a 2-0 lead 46 seconds later with a goal past Fleury.

Clark made it 3-0 just 2:57 into the second period. He banged in Alexander Ovechkin’s rebound.

Brooks Laich tallied a short-handed goal 5:55 into the period for a 4-0 Washington advantage.

Max Talbot’s bad-angle wrist shot beat Kolzig to get the Penguins on the scoreboard 6:49 into the period. Jarkko Ruutu and Chris Thorburn earned assists for the Penguins.

Christensen deflected Michel Ouellet’s wrist shot past Kolzig from the right-wing circle to trim the Penguins’ deficit to 4-2 with 1:52 left on the clock. Dominic Moore added the other assist.

Crosby rifled a shot past Kolzig from the slot 35 seconds later to make it a 4-3 game. Malkin fed a pass from the near corner to Crosby in the slot and he roofed it past Kolzig.

Malkin tied the game 3:20 into the third period. Along the near post, he slid the puck past two Capitals defenders, dove and swatted the puck into the net to tie the game. Ryan Malone and Crosby earned the assists.

The Penguins return home Wednesday night to take on the Philadelphia Flyers at Mellon Arena.
