DEVILS UPEND PENGUINS, 5-2

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – New Jersey scored three unanswered goals Friday night for a 5-2 victory over the Penguins.

Erik Christensen got the Penguins 1:14 into the contest. Skating down the near side, Christensen took a drop pass from Evgeni Malkin and wristed a shot past Martin Brodeur for his first goal with the Penguins this season. Sergei Gonchar added an assist.

Jamie Langenbrunner’s slap-shot beat Marc-Andre Fleury on the power play 2:22 later to knot the game at 1-all.

Patrik Elias put the Devils up, 2-1, when his pass to the net deflected off a Penguins defenseman and landed in the net with 8:01 remaining in the period.

Malkin scored 42 seconds into the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Streaking down the near side, he backhanded the puck at the net. The puck glided slowly and slid between Brodeur’s leg pads. Gonchar and Josef Melichar had assists.

Jay Pandolfo put New Jersey up, 3-2, when his shot slid through Fleury 7:31 into the period. Travis Zajac slapped a rebound out of the air for a 4-2 New Jersey advantage with 9:25 left on the clock. Jocelyn Thibault replaced Fleury in the Penguins net after the goal.

Brian Gionta slammed in a power-play goal to give the Devils a 5-2 lead with 13:38 left in the contest.

The Penguins return home to take on the New York Islanders at 7:30 p.m. at Mellon Arena.
