RULING ALLOWS MALKIN TO PLAY FOR PENGUINS

Evgeni Malkin can continue to play for the Penguins, thanks to a ruling by a judge Wednesday in federal court in New York.

Judge Loretta Preska denied a preliminary injunction that sought to prevent Malkin from playing for the Penguins while a lawsuit over his contract proceeds. The injunction was filed by an attorney representing Malkin’s former Russian club, Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

“We always have been confident in our position in Evgeni’s case,” Penguins Vice President of Communications Tom McMillan said. “We are very happy for Evgeni, his family and Penguins fans.”

Malkin, the second-overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has nine goals and six assists in 12 games for the Penguins this year. He is second in the rookie scoring race to Kings forward Anze Kopitar, who has 17 points (5+12) in 20 games.
