TERRY FOX RUN PLANNED IN PITTSBURGH TO RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CANCER TREATMENT
PITTSBURGH, PA, August 1, 2006 – A Terry Fox Run will be held in Pittsburgh on Oct. 15, 2006 to help raise money for cancer research and increase awareness of the challenges facing people with cancer.
Organized by the Western Pennsylvania Canada Forum, the event named for the young Canadian with terminal bone cancer who embarked on a run across his country 26 years ago to bring hope to other cancer patients, will involve members of the public, school groups and area corporations.
In addition to raising cancer research funds, the event will highlight the important relationship between Western Pennsylvania and Canada in the areas of business, culture, tourism and education.
Under the rules of the Terry Fox Foundation, all the money raised must be used for cancer research. Funds collected at the Pittsburgh event will go to the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope has touched millions of people around the world who continue to live Terry’s dream of finding a cure for cancer.
To date, more than $360 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry Fox’s name through the annual Terry Fox Run held across Canada and around the world.
The Pittsburgh Terry Fox Run will be held on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail on the city’s South Side.
Area schools and companies are being sought to recruit teams to participate in the run. A fundraising goal of $25,000 has been set.
Invitations also will be sent to medical, corporate and cultural leaders in Canada urging visits to Pittsburgh during the weekend of the Terry Fox Run to participate in tours and other programs, and to experience many of the region’s centers of excellence in numerous fields.
The Western Pennsylvania Canada Forum is a group of leaders in the region’s Canadian-American community representing the business, academic and cultural communities. They are committed to promoting activities and connections linking this region with Canada.
The Forum maintains a website at www.Canada-Connect.org and a newsletter highlighting individuals and companies with ties to Canada, information about business links between Western Pennsylvania and Canada, cultural and tourism opportunities, and services available through the Canadian Consulate in Buffalo.
