CZECH REPUBLIC OUSTS RUSSIA IN WORLDS QUARTERFINALS

The Czech Republic stunned Russia, 4-3, in overtime in Thursday’s quarterfinal at the World Championships in Latvia.

Zbynek Irgl scored a goal with 2:02 left in the extra period to give the Czech Republic the emotional victory.

The Czech Republic moves on to face Finland, a 3-0 winner over Belarus, in Saturday’s semifinal game. The winner of that contest plays for the gold medal on Sunday, while the loser battles for the bronze on Sunday as well.

Penguins super prospect Evgeni Malkin had an assist in the defeat. Malkin, the 2004 second-overall pick, finished tied with Alexander Ovechkin with a team-best nine points in seven games. Malkin had three goals and six assists, while Ovechkin had six goals and three assists. Malkin was named one of Russia’s top three players for the tournament.

Canada-Sweden

Sidney Crosby and Team Canada head to the semifinals to meet Sweden, which beat the United States 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

The winner of that contest plays for the gold medal on Sunday, while the loser plays for the bronze on Sunday as well.

Crosby scored a goal in Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Slovakia. Crosby, the Penguins’ 18-year-old superstar, leads the tournament in goals with seven in seven games. He is tied with teammate Patrice Bergeron, who had a goal and an assist Wednesday, for the overall points lead with 13. Crosby has seven goals and six assists, while Bergeron has five goals and eight assists.

Mike Hannula scored a hat-trick to lead Sweden to the quarterfinal victory over Team USA and Penguins Ryan Malone, Andy Hilbert and Brooks Orpik.
