MALKIN, RUSSIA WIN; CROSBY GETS TWO POINTS, BUT CANADA FALLS

Evgeni Malkin scored a goal Sunday to lead Russia to a 6-3 win over Switzerland at the World Championships in Latvia.

Malkin, the Penguins’ 19-year-old super prospect, helped Russia stay perfect (5-0). The Russians are in first place in Group F with eight points, ahead of Sweden (5 points), Belarus (4), Switzerland (4), Slovakia (3) and Ukraine (0).

In Group E, Finland leads the way with seven points. Canada (6) and the Czech Republic (6) are tied for second, while Team USA (4), Latvia (1) and Norway (0) are next.

Each team has one game remaining in the qualifying round play, which ends Tuesday. Then, the top four teams from each group advance to Wednesday’s single-elimination quarterfinals.

Malkin is now tied for fourth in tournament scoring with three goals, four assists and a team-best seven points in five games. Washington Capitals rookie Alexander Ovechkin was shut out in the contest.

Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist, but the Czech Republic stunned Canada.

The Czech Republic stormed to a 3-0 lead before Crosby capped Canada’s comeback when he set up Dan Hamhuis 11:26 into the second period. The Czech Republic went up 4-3 before Crosby knotted the game at 4-all 1:01 into the third. Canada (4-1) could not rally all the way, though, and the Czech Republic took the win.

Crosby, the Penguins’ 18-year-old sensation, boosted his tournament-leading point total to 11. He has a tournament-leading six goals and five assists in five games.
