CROSBY, MALKIN RECORD ASSISTS IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ACTION

Sidney Crosby continues to rack up points for Team Canada.

Crosby picked up one assist Monday in Canada’s 4-2 win over Finland in Latvia.

Crosby, the Penguins’ 18-year-old superstar, increased his tournament-leading point total to 12. He has six goals and six assists in six games for Team Canada.

The win was key for Canada, which closed qualifying round play in first place in Group E with eight points. Canada leapfrogged past second-place Finland, which has seven points in the group.

Canada opens single-elimination quarterfinal round play on Wednesday.

Penguins forward Jani Rita was not in the lineup for Finland against Canada.

Russia 3, Sweden 3

Evgeni Malkin had one assist as Russia and Sweden battled to a stalemate to close out qualifying round in first place in Group E with 9 points.

Malkin, the 2004 second-overall pick, set up Alexander Ovechkin for Russia’s first goal of the contest. Malkin, the Penguins’ 19-year-old super prospect, now has a team-best eight points (3+5) in six games.

Russia opens the single-elimination quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Penguins wingers Ryan Malone and Andy Hilbert and defenseman Brooks Orpik will be in action Tuesday when Team USA takes on the Czech Republic.

Also, Penguins winger Tomas Surovy and Slovakia meet Ukraine on Tuesday.
