SUROVY LEADS SLOVAKIA TO 6-0 TRIUMPH OVER KAZAKHSTAN

Penguins forward Tomas Surovy had a goal and an assist to lead Slovakia to a 6-0 win over Kazakhstan on Monday at the World Championships in Latvia.

Survoy scored Slovakia’s second goal of the game. He tallied a power-play goal 12:42 into the second period.

Surovy set up Slovakia’s last goal. He assisted on Milan Jurcina’s tally with 3:38 left in the third period.

Slovakia held a 52-8 edge in shots over Kazakhstan. Karol Krizan turned away all eight shots he faced to earn the shutout victory in goal.

Russia 3, Belarus 2

Russia’s big guns were silent in the victory over Belarus.

Penguins super prospect Evgeni Malkin and Capitals rookie Alexander Ovechkin did not register a point in the triumph.

Alexander Kharitonov, Igor Yemeleyev and Denis Kulyash accounted for Russia’s goals. Sergei Zvyagin stopped 15 shots to pick up the win in goal.

Russia and Slovakia meet on Wednesday to wrap up preliminary round action.
