CROSBY SETS PENGUINS ROOKIE POINTS RECORD IN LOSS

TORONTO – Penguins super rookie Sidney Crosby set a new franchise rookie points record with his second-period goal Tuesday night in a 5-3 loss to Toronto.

The 18-year-old Crosby finished with 102 points (39+63) to surpass Mario Lemieux’s 100 points as a rookie in 1984-85.

Crosby surpassed Dale Hawerchuk as the youngest player in NHL history to reach 100 points Monday night. However, fell one point shy of Hawerchuk’s record of 103 points as an 18-year-old.

Toronto grabbed a 1-0 lead when John Pohl deflected a shot past Sebastien Caron 8:19 into the first period.

Mats Sundin tapped in a one-timer with 4:40 left in the first period to give the Maple Leafs a 2-0 edge.

Sundin scored again 3:46 into the second period for a 3-0 Maple Leafs lead. He backhanded a puck past Sebastien Caron into the net.

Darcy Tucker fired in a rebound 7:16 for a power-play goal and a 4-0 Toronto advantage.

Jeremy Williams rifled in a slap-shot nearly a minute later for a 5-0 Maple Leafs lead.

The Penguins replaced Caron in goal with Marc-Andre Fleury after that goal.

Crosby broke the shutout with a goal 8:40 into the period. He sent a cross-crease pass to Andy Hilbert, but the puck deflected off Wade Belak’s skate and into the net. Colby Armstrong and Hilbert earned assists.

Following a scrum in front of the net, Crosby found Armstrong on the far post. He one-timed it into the net for a goal 2:16 into the third period. Hilbert earned the other assist.

Ryan Malone poked in a rebound off Ryan Whitney’s slap-shot 3:04 into the period to make it a 5-3 game. Eric Boguniecki added the other assist.
