CROSBY\'S THREE POINTS LEAD PENGUINS PAST ISLANDERS

Sidney Crosby’s three points Monday night helped the Pittsburgh Penguins post a 6-1 win over the New York Islanders in the season finale at Mellon Arena.

On the way, Crosby wrote himself into the NHL record books. The 18-year-old super rookie became the youngest player in NHL history to rack up 100 points with his three helpers.

“It’s nice,” Crosby said. “Since there was a possibility and it was talked about – it’s nice to get it and have the weight off my shoulders."

The Penguins got off to a quick start as Andy Hilbert scored 1:04 into the game. On a two-on-one, he took Crosby’s pass and buried it past Garth Snow. Ryan Whitney had the other assist.

“We knew we didn’t show up last game and we wanted to come back with a better effort, especially in front of the home crowd,” Crosby said. “It was sold out here tonight. That’s been the story throughout the season with the fans’ support. I think we’re all glad to get a good win for them.”

Ryan Malone buried a puck past Snow with 9:29 left in the first period. John LeClair knocked down an Islanders clearing attempt and fired a pass to Malone in the slot. He ripped it into the net.

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury stopped a Miroslav Satan penalty shot 36 seconds into the second period.

Fleury followed that with a nice glove save.

However, Satan broke though 3:24 into the period when his shot trickled through Fleury and into the net.

Tomas Surovy scored with 4:41 left in the second. Colby Armstrong sent a pass that sailed through Crosby’s legs. Skating hard to the net, he collected the puck, deked a defenseman and sent a pass to a wide-open Surovy on the far post. He slammed it in for a goal.

Crosby racked up his 100th point with 4:16 on the clock. He assisted on Malone’s power-play goal. Along the far boards, Crosby fired a pass across the rink to Malone in the slot. He wristed the puck into the net. LeClair had the other assist.

Josef Melichar boosted the Penguins’ lead to 5-1 11:34 into the third period when he fired a shot past Snow. Konstantin Koltsov had the lone assist.

Whitney capped the scoring with 4:51 remaining with a goal. He took a pass in the slot, deked a defenseman and flipped the puck into the net. Armstrong and Brooks Orpik assisted on the play.

Fleury stopped 26 of 27 shots to earn the win in goal.

ICE CHIPS: The Penguins’ lone scratch was Sergei Gonchar, who was held out of the lineup with an illness…The announced attendance was 17,084.
