CROSBY YOUNGEST TO SCORE 100; BREAKS LEMIEUX\'S ROOKIE RECORD

HIS APPEAL AS A GATE ATTRACTION HELPS PENGUINS LEAD NHL IN INCREASED ATTENDANCE

Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins culminated a phenomenal rookie season by becoming the youngest player in NHL history to score 100 points – and by breaking the team’s rookie scoring record set by Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux,

Crosby finished the season with 39 goals and 63 assists for 102 points in 81 games.

He reached the 100-point mark on Monday night at the age of 18 years, 253 days, eclipsing the previous mark set by another Hall of Famer, Dale Hawerwhuck. Hawerchuk scored his 100th point at the age of 18 years, 354 days for the Winnipeg Jets in 1981-82.

In the process, Crosby broke Lemieux’s  team rookie record of 100 points, established in the 1984-85 season.

Crosby’s appeal as a gate attraction also helped the Penguins lead the NHL in increased attendance for the 2005-06. Crowds at Mellon Arena increased by 33 percent over 2003-04, despite the fact that the club finished last in the Atlantic Division.

Crosby had an exceptionally strong finish to his rookie season, exploding for 22 points in his last 10 games (7-15-22). He scored at least two points in 10 of his last 13 games.

He will play for Team Canada in the upcoming World Championships in Latvia

Among Crosby’s achievements:

• Youngest player in NHL history to score 100 points
• Ranks second in NHL history in points scored before his 19th birthday (second to Dale Hawerchuk, 103 points for Winnipeg in 1981-82)
• Ranks second in NHL history in points scored by players who broke into the NHL in the year they were drafted (second to Hawerchuk, 103)
• Set a Pittsburgh Penguins rookie scoring record with 102 points, breaking Mario Lemieux’s mark of 100 (1984-85)
• Set a Pittsburgh Penguins rookie record for assists with 63, breaking Lemieux’s mark of 57.
• Became the seventh rookie in NHL history to score 100 points.
• Became the first rookie in NHL history to compile 100 points and 100 penalty minutes
• Finished sixth in the NHL scoring race

• Ranked third among Canadian-born NHL players in scoring (trailing only Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley)
