PENGUINS CUP CLASS AA SEMIFINALS SET FOR TUESDAY NIGHT

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League 84 Lumber Penguins Cup Championship Series semifinal round continues at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon Tuesday.

Two Class AA games will be played Tuesday as Kittanning (14-5-4) takes on Bishop Canevin (15-4-2) at 6:30 p.m. and Pine-Richland (19-1-2) plays Peters Township (15-8-0) at 8:30 p.m.

The first game pits the Wildcats against the Crusaders. The two teams met once already this season on Nov. 14 and Bishop Canevin posted a 4-3 overtime triumph.

Kittanning opened the playoffs with a 6-2 win over Moon and upset Montour, 5-4, in overtime to reach the semifinals. Bishop Canevin received a first-round bye and edged Canon McMillan, 4-3, in the quarterfinals.

The nightcap is a repeat of last year’s Class AA Penguins Cup championship game, which Peters Township won, 6-2. The Indians have won the last four Penguins Cups and claimed the state title three of the last four seasons. However, they enter this game against the Rams as the underdogs.

Pine-Richland graduated three seniors from last season’s squad. The Rams feature one of the PIHL’s top players in senior captain Josh Fodor. His 65 points (24+41) ranked first in Class AA during the regular season.

The Rams received a first-round bye, while Peters Township topped Thomas Jefferson, 4-1, in the opening round and edged West Allegheny, 5-3, in the quarterfinals. The Rams rolled past Greensburg Central Catholic, 9-0, in the quarterfinals. Pine-Richland, which has won its last nine games, beat the Indians, 3-0, on Dec. 1.

The semifinal winners advance to the Penguins Cup championship game on Saturday, March 25, at Mellon Arena at 3 p.m.
