CAPITALS POST 6-3 WIN OVER PENGUINS

WASHINGTON – The Washington Capitals held on for a 6-3 win over the Penguins on Wednesday.

It’s the Penguins’ first loss in four games to the Capitals this year. In addition, it was the final meeting between super rookies Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin.

Washington’s Ovechkin had a goal and two assists, while Crosby had an assist Wednesday night. Crosby maintained his points lead in head-to-head meetings, 9-6.

Pittsburgh’s Colby Armstrong scored 2:03 into the first period. Crosby sent a cross-crease pass to Armstrong in the slot and he fired it past goalie Olaf Kolzig. Cory Cross had the other assist.

Washington’s Ben Clymer tied the game at 1-1 at 4:14 when his shot trickled through Sebastien Caron.

Chris Clark gave the Capitals a 2-1 edge with 8:50 left in the first period. He took a pass from Ovechkin and slid it past Caron.

Ivan Majesky scored a strange goal for the Capitals when his short-handed clearing attempt bounced in front of Caron and went into the net with 3:52 on the clock.

John LeClair deflected Ric Jackman’s shot past Kolzig 9:05 into the second period.

Dainius Zubrus scored a power-play goal with 4:29 left on the clock to give the Capitals a 4-2 lead.

Ryan Malone scored a short-handed goal 4:14 into the third period to trim the deficit to 4-3.

Ovechkin rifled a power-play goal past Caron 1:40 later.

Matt Pettinger added a short-handed empty-net goal with half a second to play.

ICE CHIPS: Michel Ouellet and Brooks Orpik were the Penguins’ scratches.
